WEEK 5 OF NYC SUMMER DEBATE CAMPS!
3 MORE WEEKS TO GO!
|
Our last month of summer! But no summer vacation for our Great Debaters! Nearly every day from the beginning of the summer to the end of the summer we host debate camps in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Harlem, Manhattan, and Queens. Morning lectures on debate skills from cross examination technique to public speaking and every subject from international relations to critical theory! Afternoon debate practices, speech drills, debate games, raffles and prizes! And debate tournaments at the end of each camp! I'm inspired everyday by passionate speeches, overwhelming arguments, brilliant ideas on public policy reform, scholarly research that surpasses many college and graduate students, and simply the fun of being surrounded by so many people passionate about current events, public policy problems, and the art of rhetoric! And I'm amazed that there are no age boundaries to the power of debate. We have elementary school students, middle school students, high school students, college students and adults joining us! To learn more about the Summer of Debate please visit our website at www.nycdebatecamp.org.
Thank you everyone for making the Summer of Debate possible! Thank you to all our supporters, parents, students, teachers, coaches, judges, board members, and volunteers for your passion and dedication to expanding debate and speech opportunities to all. On August 28th we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech" and its inspiring to see so many of our students so passionate about the same ideals as King, pursuing the same Dream as well as their own Dreams, and using the power of speech to make the world a better place. Thank you.
BE GREAT! BE A GREAT DEBATER!
Sincerely,

COMMEMORATING
THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.'S
I HAVE A DREAM SPEECH
WITH 50 DAYS OF SPEECH & DEBATE TOURNAMENTS
 | Audio of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech" |
|
 | Audio & Full Text of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" Speech |
|
This year we commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech with 50 days of debate and speech tournaments dedicated to one of the world's greatest orators, civil rights leaders, advocates, and youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Martin Luther King Jr., who was himself on the debate team at Morehouse College used the power of words to move audiences and move entire nations. On August 28th 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a 17 minute speech later known as "I have a Dream," in which he called for an end to racism in the United States. Delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington, the speech was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement, helped to facilitate the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and is considered one of the greatest speeches in American history. In the speech's most famous passage, he departed from his prepared text, possibly at the prompting of Mahalia Jackson, who shouted behind him, "Tell them about the dream!" King said:
I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.' I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DEBATE CAMP
AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DEBATE LEAGUE BEGINS!
I first started teaching at the 5th grade level in New York City and so when I started my school's debate team the majority of debaters were 5th graders. As a former high school debater I had no idea what to expect and was unsure if 5th graders could even compete at debate tournaments. I was wrong! My 5th graders were incredible debaters, challenged 8th graders and even high school debaters, defeated me in countless debates, and we had a spectacular debate season. This summer we received debate camp applications from students as young as 2nd grade who were interested in debate and were equally unsure if we could host a debate camp just for elementary school students! Thanks to incredible parents, incredible students, and incredible debate coaches - we have an amazing elementary school summer debate camp in progress and cannot wait for our Elementary School Debate League to begin in September! And it goes to show that debate is for all ages! We would also like to give huge shout outs to our Elementary School Debate Coaches - Jeslyn Om, Starr Arroyo and Sadie Alperson and this week joining us are Yaira Brito and Stephanie Nyame. Thank you for your incredible and historical work in expanding debate opportunities to all ages. So if you are a parent with students in elementary school, if you are an elementary school teacher interested in debate, if you are an elementary school principal interested in starting a debate team - contact us now to join our Elementary School Debate League! Everyone of all ages can be a Great Debater!

HARLEM DEBATE INSTITUTE COMING SOON!
AUGUST 19TH - 23RD!
APPLY NOW!
"But I will tell you that, right there in the prison, debating, speaking to a crowd, was as exhilarating to me as the discovery of knowledge through reading had been. Standing up there, the aces looking up at me, the things in my head coming out of my mouth, while my brain searched for the next best thing to follow what I was saying, and if I could sway them to my side by handling right, then I had won the debate - once my feet got wet, I was gone on debating. Whichever side of the selected subject was assigned to me, I'd track down and study everything I could find on it. I'd put myself in my opponent's place and decide how I'd try to win if I had the other side; and then I'd figure a way to knock down those points" (Malcom X, 184).
Harlem is home of some of America's Greatest Debaters including Malcolm X! But for many years scholastic debate has been a very neglected aspect of the Harlem community! This summer we host the first Harlem Debate Institute (HDI) to provide the best and free debate education opportunities to all ages in Harlem! So come join us at the Harlem Debate Institute! |
