NYC GREAT DEBATERS IN THE NEWS... AGAIN!
PLUS! 2012-13 NEWS REVIEW OF NYC DEBATE!
Morales
High School Senior & Debater, Elizah Morales. Elizah will be pursuing a degree in journalism next year at Hofstra University. In high school (when not debating or judging) she interned at Fox and in this picture visited the NBC Today Show. Her role model is Darlene Rodriguez, co-anchor of Today in New York on WNBC, who is also from the Bronx.
Greetings!

Trivia Question: What do the following journalists and news commentators - Oprah Winfrey, Tom Brokaw, Tavis Smiley, Roger Ebert, Stephen Colbert, Rush Limbaugh, Suchin Pak, Jane Pauley, David Bloom, Allan Lichtman, Robert Shrum, Erwin Chemerinsky, and Elliott Minceberg - have in common?

Answer: They were all members of their high school's speech and debate teams!

While many debaters go on to pursue careers in law and government as lawyers, judges, legislators, Supreme Court Justices, and Presidents - many debaters pursue careers in journalism.  Nothing will better prepare you for a career in journalism than debate where you have to practice public speaking, questioning, research, confidence, current events, and public advocacy every day.

And so in this week's edition of the Great Debaters we celebrate Journalism... Our debaters who have been featured in the media this year as well as debaters who want to pursue careers in journalism! A quick review of our debaters in the media this year....

May - Debaters participate in Queens Public Debate by State Senator Sanders!

April - Great Debaters featured on Television and Newspapers!

March - City Debate Champions Featured in the News!

February - Bronx Borough President shouts out Debaters!

January - NYC Debaters Win National Transportation Debate!

December - Debaters featured on BronxNet!

November - NYC Debate League honored by the White House!

October - Debaters featured on preparing for November Election Debates!

We thank everyone for your support!  It takes a village to raise a child, and it is only through the incredible work of all our supporters that we can have a citywide debate league for all!  Thank You!

BE GREAT! BE A GREAT DEBATER!

Sincerely,

MAY...IN THE NEWS!
NYC DEBATERS PARTICIPATE IN NEW YORK STATE SENATOR SANDERS PUBLIC DEBATE!

Queens Debate
Queens Debate
NYC Debaters Betty Mahmud and Tyler Anderson debate on government corruption

Shout outs to ACORN High School's Tyler Anderson and Bronx School for Law's alumni Betty Mahmud at a community public debate yesterday night on the topic of "Corruption or Conspiracy" regarding accusations against several local NYC elected officials. Betty took the side that such instances show a pattern of corruption in local, state, and national government. Tyler took the side that such charges were less about corruption and more about racial bias in politics. Betty responded that such reasoning was a red herring - a fallacy of flawed logic to divert attention from the real problem of corruption. Tyler rebutted that the real problem was the media rush to judgement without trial, without fairness. The debate was passionate on both sides. Indeed, this is one of the most critical debates we are having in NYC politics today. State Senator James Sanders concluded the debate that no matter what our perspectives, that it was imperative that we "exercise our right to think" and public debates are essential in our democracy so that all sides can voice, learn, and grow from public discourse. So thank you Betty and Tyler for your incredible and passionate debate. And also huge shout outs to State Senator Sanders and Chief of Staff Paul Nichols for inviting us. And shout outs to Mr. Paul Nichols who was a high school debater and incredible debater at the public debate!

Our Great Debaters were featured in several spanish news publications in April. Debate historically in the United States was not a very diverse activity and in many areas is still very homogenous - demographically and socioeconomically.  But the New York City Urban Debate League is one of the largest and most diverse debate leagues in the country. Together, with our sister urban debate leagues across the nation we are quickly closing the achievement gap when it comes to the most rigorous academic program since Socrates and Ancient Athens.  Also, a huge shout out to El Diario journalist, Carolina Ledezma!  You will not find a bigger fan of the New York City Urban Debate League!  Thank you for all your passion and sharing the stories of all our Great Debaters!

BRONX BOROUGH PRESIDENT RUBEN DIAZ JR. SHOUTS OUT GREAT DEBATERS IN ANNUAL STATE OF BOROUGH SPEECH!

Bronx Borough President

Click here for text of the speech!

On February 19th, Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz Jr. delivered an inspiring speech about the "New Bronx" and how the Bronx is quickly becoming one of the nation's most inspiring communities.  And of course one of the most powerful stories of the New Bronx that is leading the nation are the debate teams in the South Bronx that have defeated the top debate programs in the country at every single tournament from Yale in September to Harvard in February! According to Bronx Borough President,

"Without great schools, we would not have ... one of the nation's top debate teams at the Bronx High School for Law, Government and Justice.....There is so much to do, and so much I am proud of.  Abraham Lincoln, perhaps one of the greatest presidents, once said that, "The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time."  Every single day we are working to build a new future for the Bronx.  Each day in our Bronx - the New Bronx - represents a great step forward to a more better future.  Good things are happening here, and there's more to come.  We spent many years, many decades building our borough.  We've taken past successes and built upon them Generation after generation of Bronxites - including many of you here today and our mayor Ed Koch - put in the hard work to make this borough what it is.  Look around you.  Look at how the work has paid off.  The seeds we planted so many decades ago are bearing fruit.  And it doesn't stop there. We have to keep going.  We must persevere.  We must push forward. During the next four years we will - together as "one Bronx" - as a New Bronx, bring about meaningful change to our borough.  God bless you, God bless the Bronx and God bless America!"

Thank you to Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.!  Thank you to all our Bronx supporters!  And thank you to every Borough in New York for supporting New York City's leading academic program! Every student needs to be a Great Debater! Every student needs to be a Great Leader!  And that is how we all build a New New York City together.

JANUARY...IN THE NEWS!

ACHIEVEMENT FIRST DEBATE TEAM WINS TRANSPORTATION REFORM DEBATE!

Achievement First

"Taking this opportunity was a new experience to me because it is different unlike any other typical high school policy debate. This debate not only engaged me with new people that work in various aspects of the TRB, but it also helped me consider what I wanted to pursue in college and as a career. The amount of research on transportation policies and crucial issues drives me to be a well-aware, engaged American. I am constantly learning new aspects of our nation everyday."

- Raiesa Fraser, Achievement First Brooklyn HS

"I knew that debate was full of wonders but I would have never thought it would have led me to the once in a lifetime opportunity of speaking in front of such powerful people. After going to this debate I have decided to consider continuing debating next year in college."

- Avril Gordon Joseph, Achievement First Brooklyn HS

Policy Debate is the oldest debate event in the United States. A single national topic is decided for the year and debaters research, study and debate this single topic year round. Students basically earn a Masters degree in that topic area. This year's policy debate topic is on national transportation reform.

Thanks to the generous support of the New York General Contractors Association, the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, and the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues - our debate league was only one of two leagues across the nation to be invited to participate in one of the largest industry conferences on transportation infrastructure - the Transportation Research Board's 92nd Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. Arguing the affirmative case were Raiesa Fraser and Avril Gordon Joseph of the Achievement First Brooklyn High School. Their opponents were one of the top debate teams from the Baltimore Urban Debate League.

The judges included some of the top transportation experts in the entire country including Dorval Carter, Chief Counsel at the Federal Transit Administration (FTA); Julie Cunningham, President and CEO of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO); Susan Kurland, Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs of the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S DOT); Shirley McCall, Director of the TransTech Academy at Cardozo Senior High School; Lucy Priddy, Research Civil Engineer, U.S. Army and incoming chair for TRB's Young Members Council; Jeffrey Shane, partner at Hogan Lovells and former Under Secretary of Policy at U.S. DOT under George W. Bush; and Charles Wright, Executive Director for the James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center at South Carolina State University.

Our debaters presented arguments for federal government investment in transportation infrastructure, including evidence from their own experiences as commuter students in New York. Members of the audience and the judges were impressed not only with the teams' excellent debate skills, but with their preparedness and poise before an audience of transportation leaders.

At the end of the debate, the judge panel explained that the decision was very close - but that the NYC Debate Team had won!!!!!!

Every profession has conferences to celebrate the passion of their work with a day filled with keynote speakers, workshops, topic experts, special events, prizes, and lots of goodies!  The problem is there are no conferences for students nor adults who are passionate about debate, current events, politics, civics, and democracy. So its time to bring a little bit of Athens to the Big Apple by holding public debate conferences about local, national and global issues, public policy solutions, and guest speakers.  This is what democracy and debate is all about!

So on January 31st we held our first monthly debate conference of the year! An evening of guest speakers, topic experts, pizza, lights-camera-and-action! Thank you to everyone for making our conference such a success! Thank you Great Debaters, Coaches, Teachers, parents, guests, and everyone for attending!!! Thank you to the iSchool for hosting! Thank you to our guests from the White House and Fox News!  And most of all thank you to all our schools for attending! So shout outs to Bard High School, Eleanor Roosevelt HS, Frederick Douglas Academy, Bronx Law, Gatchi Club,  IS 187, KAPPA International HS, NYC iSchool, Simon Baruch, TAG Young Scholars, Walt Whitman, and the West Side Collaborative!

Our guests had incredible things to say about our Great Debaters!...

"Here you have these 10, 12 year olds talking about Syria and the White House and everything that's going on. Things that I wasn't talking about when I was 10 or 12."

- Fox Executive, Hernandez Cortez, FoxNewsLatino.com Director

"You can't sit at home watching TV, you can't go to parties - no - get involved in school, start debating, join programs, just get involved more."

- Ashley Meija, 10th Grade Student, Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice

"In this room I'm sure there is a US President, is a Governor of New York, is a US Supreme Court Justice, is the next Steve Jobs, is the next Mozart. That's the kind of brilliance and enthusiasm and passion that these kids are here today."

NOVEMBER...IN THE NEWS!

STAR OF THE WHITE HOUSE!!!

In November the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services recognized the New York City Urban Debate League as one of the top after school programs in the country! South Bronx debater, Starr Arroyo, delivered an amazing speech at the White House and received a standing ovation from a crowd of hundreds including the First Lady! Thank you New York City for making our debaters so Great! The NYC Debate League would not have received this award without all the support of our students, teachers, parents, alumni, and volunteers. See below for more articles about our White House Award!

"Having the chance to represent my peers in accepting this award from the First Lady of the United States in the White House was an experience that I'll never forget," said Starr Arroyo. "It showed me that the power of programs like NYCUDL to change kids' lives is recognized and valued." Starr Arroyo delivered a speech at the White House on how debate has helped her overcome so many obstacles and inspired her to follow in the footsteps of fellow South Bronx high school debater, Sonya Sotomayor who became the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice.  According to Starr,

"Which is why I love the New York City Urban Debate League. You won't find any activity that makes you think and question so many ideas, read and research so many books, write and speak about the biggest problems in our world, and meet and compete against students across the nation. As President Obama stated in his speech to American students in 2009 "you may not know you could be a President or Supreme Court justice until you joined your school's debate team!"

For the full transcript of Starr's speech, click here.  For the full video of the White House Ceremony including Starr's speech, click here.

Congratulations Starr!  Such a Starr!!  And Thank You everyone for making all our students Debate Stars everyday!

"The New York City Urban Debate League is a program that empowers underserved students while immersing them in public speaking, research techniques, civics, law and ethnic studies.  Along with countless debating trophies, the program boasts 10 years of data showing that their alums have higher grade point averages, high school graduation rates, college acceptances and number of scholarships than their peers."
