Greetings!

Last week was another historic week for the New York City Debate League when the New York State Senate passed Senate Resolution 429 to recognize the achievements of the New York City Great Debaters!  Senator Rivera sponsored the legislation and it was unanimously passed by the State Senate with thunderous applause to recognize New York's most award winning academic program!  This follows our recognition by the White House as the nation's top after school program in the arts and humanities!  And in a sneak peak of next week's newsletter - recognition by the Bronx Borough President as one of the city's top academic programs! From the city to the state to national awards - there is no debate - why we call our students the Great Debaters!

And none of this would be possible without your support!!!  Thank you to all our teachers, all our coaches, all our principals, all our students, all our families, all our judges, all our alumni, all our donors, and all of New York City for working together to provide the best debate education opportunities to all New Yorkers!

BE GREAT! BE A GREAT DEBATER!

On February 12th, the Senate of the State of New York passed Senate No. 429 to recognize the achievements of the New York City Urban Debate League and the Great Debaters of the New York City!  Thank you Senator Rivera for sponsoring this Resolution!

"WHEREAS, A great state is only as great as those individuals who perform exemplary service on behalf of their community, whether through unique achievement in professional or other endeavors, or simply through a lifetime of good citizenship; and

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that when individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention it is appropriate to publicly proclaim and commend those individuals for the edification and emulation of others; and

WHEREAS, Such service, which is truly the lifeblood of the community and the State, so often goes unrecognized and unheralded"

FISH & RICHARDSON'S
GREAT DEBATERS!

Thank you to our Great Debater Partner of Fish & Richardson Law Firm which generously hosted an evening for our Great Debaters! Our new member school, Bard High School was invited to Fish and Richardson Law Firm to learn about careers in law, participate in a tour of the law firm and have dinner with attorneys.  Fish & Richardson also took the team out to New York's Intelligence Squared Debate at the Kaufman Center.  The resolution was on the prohibition of genetically engineered babies.  The debaters included the top professors, authors, and scientists on the topic.  Huge shout outs to Fish & Richardson for hosting us and in particular attorney, Michael Autuoro for organizing!  Also shout outs to the Great Debaters of Bard High School and in particular - Debate Team Captain, Hannah Frishberg who organized the trip.  Hannah also wrote about the evening...

"This Wednesday, February 13th, 14 members of the Bard High School Early College Manhattan Speech and Debate team were toured through the Fish and Richardson Law Firm, learning about patent law and IP litigation and experiencing one of the best views in the city. Next, the students attended an Intelligent Squared Debate on the prohibition of genetically engineered babies at the Kaufman Center - some students even had the opportunity to speak with audience member Mr. James Watson, the discoverer of DNA. It was a fantastic afternoon, and students took the subway home filled with new information about the possibilities of genetic engineering, decadent rice krispie treats, and even a complimentary five sided rainbow colored USB port! What a day!" - Hannah Frishberg

Who's Simon Baruch?

Mr. Baruch was of course a debater!  Dr. Simon Baruch was a famous doctor in NYC during the 1900s.  At the turn of the twentieth century, many private homes and most tenements in NYC did not have running water. Contagious diseases were rampant, and among the poor, mortality was high. Dr. Baruch debated, argued, advocated, wrote, lobbied and championed for the construction of and wide use of public baths to benefit the residents of New York City as well as medicinal benefits of mineral springs. The first public baths in the country were opened in 1901 on Rivington Street in lower Manhattan. He continued for the rest of his life to research, write and advocate for the benefits of water (public baths, mineral springs, hot springs, hydrotherapy) in promoting public and personal health.

Policy Debate & Public Forum Debate Resources and Curriculum Available!
Our tournaments feature the country's two most popular and rigorous debate formats - policy debate and public forum debate.

POLICY DEBATE
Policy debate is the oldest American debate format.  It is also the most popular debate format at the college and high school levels. Policy Debate engages students in a year long study of a single topic where students earn an equivalent of a masters degree on that topic. Policy Debate is unique in (1) freedom of argumentation (there are no limits in strategies of argumentation - the only rule being there are no rules), (2) quantity of information (debaters research and study thousands of arguments), (3) speed of thinking and delivery (debate rounds can reach over 350 words per minute), (4) evidence based argumentation (points go to not how well you speak but how well you read, analyze, question, construct and deconstruct evidence). Click here to access our policy debate resources.

PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE
Our other event of Public Forum Debate is the country's newest, fastest growing debate event, and one of the most popular debate events at the high school level.  Public Forum Debate ("PFD") is the most real world debate format at the national level and one of the best means of preparation for a career in politics and leadership. PFD challenges our debaters to be tomorrow's political leaders with topics that change each month based on current events.  Students engage in presidential style debates of researching, writing and delivering speeches on the most pressing current issues of the day. Points go to debaters who best persuade the audience.  PFD is also the best debate format for younger, beginner debaters and new coaches looking for a quick and easy debate format to learn.  Click here to access our public forum debate resources. And email us ([email protected]) for the latest topic resources available each month.
