DEBATE CON #1
MONTHLY DEBATE CONFERENCES FOR ALL OF NEW YORK CITY!

NYC history was made on January 31st 2013 with DEBATE CON #1 - a monthly debate conference for the entire NYC community!  Click here for Fox News coverage of our event!

Every profession has conferences to celebrate the passion of their work with a day filled with keynote speakers, workshops, topic experts, special events, prizes, and lots of goodies!  The problem is there are no conferences for students nor adults who are passionate about debate, current events, politics, civics, and democracy.  So its time to bring a little bit of Athens to the Big Apple by holding public debate conferences about local, national and global issues, public policy solutions, and guest speakers.  This is what democracy and debate is all about!

So on January 31st we held our first monthly debate conference of the year! An evening of guest speakers, topic experts, pizza, lights-camera-and-action! Thank you to everyone for making our conference such a success! Thank you Great Debaters, Coaches, Teachers, parents, guests, and everyone for attending!!! Thank you to the iSchool for hosting! Thank you to our guests from the White House and Fox News!  And most of all thank you to all our schools for attending!  So shout outs to Bard High School, Eleanor Roosevelt HS, Frederick Douglas Academy, Bronx Law, Gatchi Club,  IS 187, KAPPA International HS, NYC iSchool, Simon Baruch, TAG Young Scholars, Walt Whitman, and the West Side Collaborative!

Our guests had incredible things to say about our Great Debaters!...

"Here you have these 10, 12 year olds talking about Syria and the White House and everything that's going on. Things that I wasn't talking about when I was 10 or 12." - Fox Executive, Hernandez Cortez, FoxNewsLatino.com Director

"You can't sit at home watching TV, you can't go to parties - no - get involved in school, start debating, join programs, just get involved more." - Ashley Meija, 10th Grade Student, Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice

"In this room I'm sure there is a US President, is a Governor of New York, is a US Supreme Court Justice, is the next Steve Jobs, is the next Mozart. That's the kind of brilliance and enthusiasm and passion that these kids are here today." - Fox Executive, Vincent Cordero, Executive of Fox Deportes

Mayor_Koch

FEBRUARY 1ST
NYC MAYOR AND HIGH SCHOOL DEBATE TEAM PRESIDENT
ED KOCH PASSES AWAY.

The common characteristic of the majority of public leaders - US Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, Senators, Representatives, Governors, Mayors and activists - were that they were members of their school's debate teams!

And so when former NYC Mayor Ed Koch passed away, it was no surprise to read in the New York Times that he was also a former high school debater and President of his Debate Team - just like current Mayor Bloomberg who was also President of his high school's debate team.

Whether you voted for or against Mayor Ed Koch - there was no debate that he was one of the most passionate and outspoken advocates for New York City.  He never sat down, he always stood up to make a difference  - from saving his drowning sister to serving his country in World War II to a total record of 21 election wins in 26 years to a lifetime of public service to the city of New York - you won't find a better debater in all of New York!  He was always open to cross-examination with his trademark phrase "How'm I doin?" Even after his three terms as Mayor he continued advocating, debating and criticizing his entire life!  "It's a lot more fun being a critic than being the one criticized."  - Ed Koch

Mr. Koch began his political career as President of his school's Debate Team.  After returning from World War II he earned his law degree from New York University and became founding partner of his law firm - Koch, Lankenau, Schwartz & Kovner.  In 1952 he became a street corner speaker for presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson.  Koch then joined the Village Independent Democrats, a club opposed to the Manhattan Democratic organization known as Tammany Hall.  In 1966 Mr. Koch was elected to the City Council. In 1968 he was elected to the United States Congress to represent the 17th Congressional District of Manhattan.  In 1977 he decided to run for Mayor of New York.  It was a very tough campaign featuring many debates, but in the end Mr. Koch won the election and served as New York Mayor for three terms - his last term being re-elected with a historic 78% of the vote.

After being mayor, he became even more active in NYC advocacy!   He joined protests and rallies and was even arrested in his protest of the police shooting of Amadou Diallo, he campaigned for Barack Obama, led a coalition, New York Uprising to fix corruption, wrote articles for the Post, the Daily News, The Jewish World Review, and other publications, even wrote movie and restaurant reviews, served in the State's comptroller's office, became an adjunct professor at New York University, Brandeis University and Baruch College, served as judge on the television show "People's Court," and wrote 17 books from commentaries on politics to murder mysteries.  And all of this - despite a heart attack, quadruple bypass surgery, replacement of his aortic valve, irregular heartbeat, pacemaker, and hospitalizations!

Whether you agreed or disagreed with his politics, there was no debate that Mr. Koch was one of the greatest New York City debaters and leaders and devoted his life to his city and country.

"If you agree with me on 9 out of 12 issues, vote for me. If you agree with me on 12 out of 12 issues, see a psychiatrist." - Mayor Ed Koch

Who's Simon Baruch?

Mr. Baruch was of course a debater!  Dr. Simon Baruch was a famous doctor in NYC during the 1900s.  At the turn of the twentieth century, many private homes and most tenements in NYC did not have running water. Contagious diseases were rampant, and among the poor, mortality was high. Dr. Baruch debated, argued, advocated, wrote, lobbied and championed for the construction of and wide use of public baths to benefit the residents of New York City as well as medicinal benefits of mineral springs. The first public baths in the country were opened in 1901 on Rivington Street in lower Manhattan. He continued for the rest of his life to research, write and advocate for the benefits of water (public baths, mineral springs, hot springs, hydrotherapy) in promoting public and personal health.

Policy Debate & Public Forum Debate Resources and Curriculum Available!
Our tournaments feature the country's two most popular and rigorous debate formats - policy debate and public forum debate.

POLICY DEBATE
Policy debate is the oldest American debate format.  It is also the most popular debate format at the college and high school levels. Policy Debate engages students in a year long study of a single topic where students earn an equivalent of a masters degree on that topic. Policy Debate is unique in (1) freedom of argumentation (there are no limits in strategies of argumentation - the only rule being there are no rules), (2) quantity of information (debaters research and study thousands of arguments), (3) speed of thinking and delivery (debate rounds can reach over 350 words per minute), (4) evidence based argumentation (points go to not how well you speak but how well you read, analyze, question, construct and deconstruct evidence). Click here to access our policy debate resources.

PUBLIC FORUM DEBATE
Our other event of Public Forum Debate is the country's newest, fastest growing debate event, and one of the most popular debate events at the high school level.  Public Forum Debate ("PFD") is the most real world debate format at the national level and one of the best means of preparation for a career in politics and leadership. PFD challenges our debaters to be tomorrow's political leaders with topics that change each month based on current events.  Students engage in presidential style debates of researching, writing and delivering speeches on the most pressing current issues of the day. Points go to debaters who best persuade the audience.  PFD is also the best debate format for younger, beginner debaters and new coaches looking for a quick and easy debate format to learn.  Click here to access our public forum debate resources. And email us ([email protected]) for the latest topic resources available each month.
