One of the basic responsibilities we have as Jewish parents and a community at large is to teach our children to live Jewishly.  The Shema, which we say morning and night (and also includes the V'ahavta), says to impress upon our children the importance of our words, our actions, and everything we do in all moments.  To me, this speaks more broadly to our values and responsibilities to live our lives with respect, with kindness, and with meaning.  How do we live Jewishly? Coming Up: Georgia Ferrell Offers Words of Wisdom
Georgia Ferrell is the mother of Jonathan Ferrell, who was killed by a Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department officer Randall Kerrick in 2013. Rabbi Judy developed a friendship with her during Kerrick's trial and, inspired by Mrs. Ferrell's strength and wisdom, invited her to attend and speak at our Shabbat worship service this Friday. Although Mrs. Ferrell has dealt with the death of her son and the demands of a public trial, she humbly prays for peace and understanding. Please join us in welcoming her as she offers words of comfort, home and love to our congregation. Willie Ferrell, Jonathan's brother, will also attend Shabbat services with his mother.
In Case You Missed It: TBE has Pride
Torah was read for the first time in Pride Week history last weekend. In the picture, Cantor Mary chants Torah as Rabbi Jonathan gabbais using an iPhone app during the Inclusion Shabbat service. TBE and its Keshet community had a strong presence during the Pride events and the parade. Rabbi Judy was one of the featured-faith leaders in the Charlotte Five article, A look at religion's role in Charlotte Pride Week.
