To Drug or not to Drug, that is the question.

The response is easy... "JUST SAY NO!"

The Problem-

The other day I had the good fortune to go to a conference on the topic of how to provide quality, effective, healthy and kind care to facility residents suffering from Dementia.

It can and should be done. Falling back on psychoactive

drugs is lazy and more importantly DEADLY.

Overutilization of drugs to sedate "troublesome" residents here in California is common.

In fact, one out of every four California nursing home residents is given either Risperidol, Seroquel, Zyprexa or Halodol on a daily basis.

All of these drugs have black box warnings
"elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death."

It has inspired our Attorney general to characterize them as

"deadly weapons."

They are chemical restraints. Anti-depressants are also often prescribed as the first resort. There is a fall risk associated with these drugs. Falls, as you know from my newsletters and seminars, are also deadly.

Why is the happening?

These drugs are used to "control" resident's "bad" or "inconvenient" behavior. Yet, the Federal Government has issued guidelines that set forth for what purposes
these drugs should not be used.

Staying social:
Why staying connected is important

One of overlooked symptoms of hearing loss is the impact the condition can have on socializing.

It's easy to recoil from get-togethers because of the difficulty hearing someone speak in a noisy
environment.

While auditory damage may make socializing seem more like a chore than a pleasure, there are a wealth of benefits to gain through interacting with others that can make the challenge of adapting to social settings worthwhile.

Here are a few of the primary reasons why staying connected with friends, family and the world may not only keep you active, but also improve your overall health:

1) Motivate your mind

Multiple studies have tested the wonders socializing can do for your brain. This can pertain to everything from challenging a friend in a game of chess
to simply chatting with a relative about your favorite television show.

According to researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, socializing can improve your overall mental function by 75 percent.
