If you know me, you know that helping elderly people maintain their independence is something I am very passionate about.
Alzheimer's robs you of this independence, and since there is no real "cure," there is no real "end" in sight. Yet.
The good news is that there are many studies being conducted to help scientists understand this horrible disease, and more money is being spent on finding a cure than ever before.
One of the most important things we can do for ourselves is exercise. Yes, exercise.
Bar none, this is the most effective way for us to keep our minds and bodies strong and ward off disease.
Dancing has proven to be the most effective form of exercise because you have to constantly remember the steps and you have to move your body! You may remember my fundraiser, "Dancing for the Memories..."
Here are the six pillars of a brain-healthy lifestyle:
- Regular exercise
- Healthy diet
- Mental stimulation
- Quality sleep
- Stress management
- An active social life
One of my dear friends, May, is a member of the Legacy Runners group who have completed every L.A. Marathon since it's inception in 1986. If you are like me, I can't even conceive of running 5 miles, much less a 26 mile marathon! Even so, I urge you to watch my video interview of this inspring 74 year old woman as she explains her philosophy about life, running, life long learning, and goal setting. Who knows. It may even motivate you to get started on a new routine! Click Here to watch the video.
