SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST
The title of this newsletter is blunt. A colleague who was my age just died from this. He was in good shape and just collapsed in the prime of his life.
It came out of nowhere. Within 2 days of this, another colleague, again my age, had a massive heart attack. I believe that what they shared was unrelenting pressure, a risk factor along with physical stress (including stress from very low blood levels of potassium or magnesium), inherited disorders and structural changes in the heart (such as those that occur from high blood pressure and infection).
Ironically, I was going to prepare this newsletter anyway as award winning columnist Steve Lopez cemented a fear of this prospect in me at a recent get together. He suffered SCA while undergoing a benign knee replacement procedure last August.

Veterans Funeral Benefits
There is a great deal of confusion about the funeral benefits to which Veterans are entitled.
Some Veterans think they are entitled to a completely free funeral, some think they are entitled to nothing, and others are somewhere in between those two extremes. Educating Veterans to ensure they clearly understand what burial benefits are deserved and available to them is extremely important.

MY WATCHDOG

Alerting you to the latest SCAMS, Elder Abuse,
and things that are just plain WRONG!
I am starting a crusade against elder abuse because every day, without exaggeration, I receive phone calls from siblings, where another sibling is stealing from a parent or grandparent; from a neighbor of an elderly person; or the elderly person herself/himself (I am currently trying to unwind an irrevocable trust that a 90 year old woman was unduly influenced to create).
Ironically, I just now took a call from a "good son" who saved his 90 year old mother from being the victim of financial abuse by a large local banking institution.
Apparently, a 20 something year old "investment adviser" was about to have her sign the dotted line on a product that would not benefit her for another 20 years! Luckily her son, who was waiting out in the car so as to give her privacy and independence, came in just at the right moment to save the day!
(Note: I work with some great investment professionals, so please don't think I am not disparaging the industry)
This not only breaks my heart and angers me, but worse, it depletes savings necessary to live a dignified and independent existence, which is my goal for everybody.
After the fact, there is typically no way to recoup the financial loss that an older adult has suffered. The only way to combat financial elder abuse is to recognize it and report it, and this requires for people to be empowered by knowledge and to help prevent it from happening.
Actually, my crusade began a few years ago by writing it in my newsletters and including this topic in my seminars.
Soon, I will be spearheading rallies throughout Southern California with government and law enforcement officials.
I will keep you posted on how the crusade is developing. (If you would like to volunteer to help. please email me.)
