If and When You Retire
I recently went to a symposium at the Milken Institute. Marci Alboher, author of "The Encore Career Handbook: How to Make a Living and a Difference in the Second Half of Life," was joined by film industry pioneer and University of California Board of Regents Chair Sherry Lansing and others who discussed what it takes to create a fulfilling and meaningful second act.
Here is what I learned: Most baby boomers do not speak the language of retirement. Sure they may technically retire from a long held position in a particular industry, but they do not retire in the way that we use the term when speaking of what the previous generations did; a phase that preceded the end of their lives.
For sure, the golden years for many of the baby boomers with whom I speak envision time off from the rat race, but they also speak to a desire to become active in a field from which they were previously barred because of financial constraints.
For me, I love what I do. I also know that in 15 years, when I am 65, if I have good health and enough money in the bank to feel secure, I will do something else. I will not retire.
What I do may not make me any money, but I will work. Whenever Joel and I take our kids to a National Park we ponder what it would be like to someday work in one.
It is also understandable that you may need to continue working.

The ALZHEIMER'S Corner
When someone complains of a memory problem, it can actually be a processing problem. That is, they have not taken the time or used the right devices to shift what they have perceived into their long term memory bank. In other words, you can read things ten times and if you do not have the means with which to process what you are reading, you will never remember it because that is all you are trying to do, remember it.
The same holds true for "losing" your keys or sun glasses. You do not remember where you put them because you did focus on that when you put them down and you did not create a method to remember.
Do you ever forget someone's name within a minute of them telling it to you? This takes effort and time and your capacity is reduced by fatigue, depression and anxiety. When someone has a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer's disease, they fatigue easily and this process slows down.
So for now on, let's all be more conscious. Make a to do list, use memory gadgets like a key finder or a buzzer on the your phone, etc. When you are trying to learn something new create flow charts or color diagrams so that it sinks in and you are not just left to relying on your memory of what you saw and let's see how that works!

Last month I announced that I would be launching Susan's Picks on my website. These are companies that I know and trust.
If you need the services of a dedicated professional, this is the place you can find them.
Some of them appear in this newsletter so please check them out by clicking on their links.
Please click on HERE to go to the Susan's Picks webpage. Some of my "picks" have their logos in this newsletter. Please check them out!
Please note: Because I am very selective, the list of companies is small. I will not put anyone up that I do not have confidence in recommending.
If you know of a company that you think is FIRST RATE, please let me know and I will check them out! They may qualify to become a Susan's Pick!

STATE SUPPORTED IN-HOME CARE
Why would I put what
seems to be a victory for State supported In-Home-Care in my Watchdog Report?
There is just no way that we should be happy about the fact that the State will only cut 8% from the In Home Supportive Services Program (which pays for 350,000 workers to provide in home care services t the poor) this year instead of 20%.
THIS IS THE WRONG DIRECTION. We need to have more services delivered to the home to keep more people out of the nursing home. This is why I wrote my book. If and when you have a chance to have your voice heard on these issues, please speak up.
