You can increase your risk of developing dementia by neglecting your hearing

Last month I did a seminar in Long Beach.  Some of you were there. If so, this is worth repeating. Jay Muhury of Jay's Hearing in Long Beach spoke about hearing loss.

I already knew that about a third of people who are 60 or older have some hearing loss. It is a condition called presbycusis (I knew my undergraduate degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology would pay off some day!).

Experts believe that it may be due to the loss of sensory receptors in our inner ears. At first, some sounds may seem muffled, and high-pitched voices may be harder to understand.

I can tell you that I struggle sometimes to understand what someone on a television show is saying.

Of course, if you notice a sudden and dramatic change in your hearing, that may be something more than just the aging process and you should be examined immediately.

Alerting you to the latest scams, elder abuse, and things that are just plain WRONG!

Would you be better off committing a crime and going to Federal prison where you receive food, clothing, and medical care?

Would you be better off in a prison than a retirement home if you lack financial assets or family?

Retirement home stays can cost close to $6,000 a month, with the elderly often losing all of their assets in order to pay for care in the last few years of their life.

If you commit a crime and go to prison you will get the following for free:  a steady supply of food, a relatively high level of healthcare, and some social interaction. In the best situations, you could take classes for college credit, learn a new trade, or spend your days catching up on television.

Meeting Erma Bombeck's best friend

While at an author's get together at the Galaxy book store in Redondo Beach, I had the good fortune of meeting Lorraine Brodek. She was best friends with Erma Bombeck. Her book "Nobody in a Somebody World" is an entertaining account of life in Beverly Hills around celebrities but not being one of them. What a story!
