Help Us Envision ACPE's Future

By David Carl, Organizational Design Work Group Chair

ACPE is evaluating our national structure to best position us for the future. We can't do that without your help.

There are multiple avenues for your voice to be heard:

First, introducing ACPExchange* - an online community where ACPE members can engage colleagues in ways that build the work of the association in service to its members. The Organizational Design Work Group will host online discussions to give every member a chance to participate. Each week we will post a different question focused on 'why'; why we exist, why ACPE is important. Your engagement in the conversations around these questions is essential to the work group's efforts. The first questions will be posted Monday, August 3. New questions will be posted each week into September. We will send out a "News You Can Use" each Monday to remind you to join the discussion on each topic. Participation is entirely voluntary, but our desire is a robust, engaged process and that means your input is critical and valued.

The second place you can participate in the conversation about the future is at the regional meetings this fall. We will host a town meeting at each regional conference to gather responses and feedback around the future as we work to clarify the ideas, hopes and dreams of the members for the direction of this process and of ACPE.

The Board of Representatives selected Donna Dunn of Tecker International to help us in this process. The Organizational Design Work Group needs your help. We want your input. Even if you can't attend a regional conference, please join the discussion online every week.

* To access ACPExchange, visit the ACPE website. Hover your mouse on My ACPE on the main navigation bar, select My Communities from the dropdown menu. You will be prompted for your credentials if you are not already logged-in. Select ACPExchange from the list of available communities. If you need assistance logging-in, please call the national office at (404) 320-1472.

Student Unit Database Update

We are excited to announce the transition to a new, more functional and easier to use system for reporting and recording student units!

As you know, the National Office has been hard at work upgrading our database and our systems. There are many moving parts to this process and sometimes things have moved slower than we would have liked, but we are now at an important transition point and we need your help in the implementation process of the new student unit database.

We will be sharing video instructions, written instructions and will hold "live chats" about the new processes that will be put into place, so don't worry if some of the items below don't make sense yet.  However, before we can get to that point, we need your help!

The Dog Days of Summer!

By David C. Johnson, ACPE President

David Johnson 2x3

In Charlotte it is hot and humid and we are in the midst of a drought. There are those pop-up showers in the afternoon that just increase the humidity. We are in the "Dog Days of Summer." For most of us these are the hottest days of the year. You certainly do not want to go out and do much of anything. Our desire is to stay cool and do little. Staying cool, drinking iced tea and swinging in a hammock is what life is all about. OK, welcome to my fantasy.

Most of us are also in the "Dog Days of CPE." We are finishing our summer units, coming to the end of residency yearlong programs while beginning to organize our programs for the next year. It is a busy if not a somewhat hectic period where many also hope for a time of vacation.

ACPE is busy also. The task forces that were organized around this time last year are gaining momentum as they move toward their deadline of presenting a final product at our 2016 annual conference.

Tilling a Tenacity for Generosity and Gratitude

By Ute Schmidt, 2015 Annual Campaign Chair

Ute Schmidt

Summer Greetings! CPE summers are often filled with intensity, awesome learning and transitions. You may be winding down a summer unit, a residency, preparing for a well-deserved vacation or for retirement. It is a good time to take a moment to reflect on what you are grateful for this summer. As many of your students have given much to your hospitals and other organizations, we invite you to consider honoring their contributions by donating to the Annual Campaign. Many of you have remembered lovingly Karrie Oertli by giving to the Annual Campaign. I cannot think of a better way to honor Karrie and her wonderful work in ACPE, and thank you so much for your generosity and thoughtfulness.

In our Annual Campaign work we have had another lively conference call with the regional champions, generating new ideas to engage all of you in the Holy Work of supporting our association. We also welcome Renita Mercado-Heinzl as the new Champion for the South Central and Southwest regions into our midst! Please join us in welcoming Renita and sharing in the momentum from our Annual Conference in May when we were re-energized for our work. As of today we have raised close to $23,500 in contributions, and have almost doubled our number of monthly supporters!! Will you help us reach our goal of 100% member participation by supporting the Annual Campaign? Thank you all for sharing your generosity and commitment with ACPE.

Atlanta CPE Day

On July 8, 2015, nearly 100 CPE students and supervisors from all over the Metro Atlanta and North Georgia gathered for the annual CPE Day - a day of service, community, and education. CPE centers represented included the Atlanta VA Hospital, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Care and Counseling Center of Georgia, Northeast Georgia Health System, Spiritual Health at Emory Healthcare, and The Training and Counseling Center at St. Luke's.

Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) helped host and organize the event. As the first food bank in the nation, ACFB is now the model for food banks around the country, distributing more than 60 million pounds of food each year to more than 600 non-profit agencies in the community.

This fall there is a rare opportunity to learn with and from our international spiritual care colleagues. For only the second time in its history, the International Congress will meet in the USA. The International Congress is comprised of national spiritual care, counseling and education associations as well as educators and practitioners from around the globe. It works to bring together diverse religious traditions, styles of spiritual care practice and cultural understandings that broaden the thinking and work of spiritual care workers everywhere.
