Are you making the most of the slower season?

Many contractors use the slower months to organize, inventory and prepare for the spring rush.  If you want to gain a competitive edge, use the off-season to learn new things.   Managers can identify and plan new revenue sources. Team members can learn to complete tasks more efficiently.

Keeping up with new technology and better solutions is always a challenge. We can't keep doing things the same way.

You owe it to yourself and your team to invest some time in training. Education for your employees has significant paybacks in increased productivity, reduced errors and overall retention.

Forget about dusty textbooks.  Today's professional education is better and more relevant.   Hands on classes, insightful videos and on-line seminars provide knowledge that is easy to absorb and understand.

Grow your professionalism by taking advantage of all of the learning opportunities we offer.   We have details on our Business Excellence Luncheon, Seminars and ProGreen in this issue.

CPS Distributors

Keynote Speaker Dr. Jon Kedrowski
We are excited to announce our 4th Annual Business Excellence Luncheon.  This year's program will focus on business excellence and planning your vision for the future.  The event will be facilitated by Lowell Kaufhold and Dave Nelson of CPS sharing how to prepare your business for a prosperous future.  They will also discuss goal setting, leadership, teamwork and other related topics specifically for the industries that CPS supports.

This year's Keynote Presentation:  Climb Your Everest by Dr. Jon Kedrowski.  Dr. Kedrowski, world-renowned mountain climber, and author, describes how the lessons he learned conquering extreme mountain peaks can help everyone tackle the Everests in their own careers and lives.

Jon will relay stories of goal-setting, teamwork, and perseverance, the very elements that were the foundation of his successes on Everest, the 14ers in Colorado, and the Cascade Volcanoes, and illustrate how mountains truly are metaphors for life and that anything is possible.  In the end, whether you are facing a tough climb to a summit or a tough climb in your business, the value of the journey is always the most important lesson.  After hearing Jon's moving keynote, you will understand that the summit may only be reached and savored for a short time while the lessons learned along the way may be the ultimate definition of success.  Click Here to Register!

5 Rules for Recruiting & Retaining Landscape Employees

1)  Make a list of reasons why a candidate should choose your company. Making a list will make these easier to remember when you're chatting with a good prospect.   Remember everyone says "they have great benefits" or "this is a great place to work".  Be specific.

2) Define what you're really looking for.  Motivation, drive, good manners, and work ethic are more important than knowing how to assemble sprinklers or plant a tree.

3)  Recruit continuously.  Always advertise for new team members even when you're fully staffed. Employees are increasingly mobile, so you need to be looking all of the time.

4)  Do quarterly performance reviews. Have a conversation about how the person is doing; what would make his/her job go easier; what suggestions he/she has for improvement.

5)  Stay competitive.  Don't lose your best person to a better offer from a competitor.  Give raises to stay competitive (and do them proactively rather than waiting to be asked).  Institute "golden handcuffs" performance incentives to encourage employees to stay and prosper.
