January 2016

2016 is shaping up to be a great year for landscape professionals.
Recent survey results showed many contractors enjoyed strong growth in 2015 and are bullish about prospects for the new year.
Several important economic drivers are supporting continued growth. A stronger job market, low interest rates and low inflation are driving growth in the housing market, both in sales of homes and in home improvements.
Consumer confidence, a measure of willingness to spend on improvements, has also gotten stronger. Also helping the industry to grow will be a steady increase in disposable income, and an aging population that will continue to grow their use of professional services.
Be aggressive in your preparations for spring, particularly in recruiting quality team members who can help you get the work done. Let us know how we can help you have your best year ever!

Avoid Common Landscape Lighting Errors
Fixing issues before they happen can go a long way in creating landscape lighting designs that set your business apart.
Avoid these common mistakes:
- Using the wrong beam spread. The taller the item, the narrower you'll want the beam For a tall and thin tree, a 10 degree fixture is ideal; for a shorter, wider tree/shrub, choose a 35 or 60 degree.
- Lighting a tree for the distant future. It's better to use a fixture that's right for the tree today, and change it out as the tree grows.
- Using only one type of fixture across a property. Homeowners rely on professional landscape lighters to bring their property to life. If you're unsure what fixtures to use and where, training can help.
- Using too many fixtures along a sidewalk. Avoid the airport runway look. Kichler suggests placing fixtures approximately 10 feet apart, staggered on each side of the path.
- Not listening to homeowners. Get to know homeowners' wants and needs; otherwise you can face a costly redo.
Want to learn more? Kichler offers a two-day, interactive LED Landscape Lighting Training session to help professionals sharpen their landscape lighting design, installation and troubleshooting skills. Visit kichler.com for details.
