It's that time of year when your team is working extra hard to meet your customers' demands.

Here are some tips for keeping them motivated and efficient during this busy time.

  • Over-communicate - schedules change.  Make sure everyone (both your team and your customers) knows the latest work plans.
  • Acknowledge the wins - let everyone know that you're proud of what they're accomplishing. Share photos and customer comments.
  • Set short term goals with rewards - buy lunch or hand out gift cards for hitting weekly targets.
  • Keep a positive attitude - the boss sets the tone for the whole crew.

Find ways to show appreciation and support for the hard work your team is putting in to help you reach your goals.

The Irrigation Association and CPS are proud to announce that Governor John Hickenlooper has proclaimed July 2015 as Smart Irrigation Month for the state of Colorado.

This is the fourth consecutive year that Colorado has recognized Smart Irrigation Month, an Irrigation Association initiative that began in 2005.  With Colorado recognizing the month of July as Smart Irrigation Month for the fourth year in a row reinforces the continued importance of efficient irrigation for our industry.

Four Tips for Better Relations with Your Service Techs

One group of employees is often misunderstood by contracting business owners: Service Technicians. These dedicated individuals work independently and often have an entrepreneurial mindset toward providing excellent service to their customers.

There's often a lack of good communication between management and the service team that leads to missed opportunities.

Here are some ways to improve your working relationships with your techs:

Technicians love hands-on learning, they hate meetings.   Engage techs with training that emphasizes doing instead of just listening. When you have meetings, keep them short and to the point.

Technicians need a landing place in your shop. Make sure they have a place to gather when in the shop and a place to receive their specific parts, messages and supplies. Many companies provide a specific in-box area for each technician.

Pay for performance. Have a pay strategy that rewards technicians for getting the job done efficiently and correctly. Offer opportunities to earn bonuses for identifying new customers and for engaging customers with new products and services.

Insist on the best. Don't tolerate poor workmanship, messy service vehicles and sloppy treatment of inventory. Don't let "bad apple" techs drag down your good team members. Do what's in the best interest of your company, your customers and the team by setting the standards high and enforcing them.  Your good techs will appreciate it!

Tips for Making Your Lighting Design Come to Life

Demos give homeowners a realistic impression of the finished job
Seeing a landscape lighting design in action is a great way to help potential clients visualize the possibilities and close more bids. Here's how to get the most out of a demo:
  • Light the demo for several nights. This gives homeowners the chance to get accustomed to the end effect. Then, when the lights are removed, they'll miss the difference the lighting makes.
  • Walk the property with the homeowners. Walking the property assures that homeowners take the time to really appreciate the quality of the landscape lighting, while also giving them the chance provide input. Be sure to walk the property on the first and last night of the demo to create the perfect transition to close the sale.
  • Market your skills to the neighborhood. Let homeowners in the area know about a demo with fliers, yard signs and door hangers. Once you're back for the install, these neighbors will often stop by for information.
  • Keep demo tools on-hand. The Design Pro LED Contractor Demo Bag (ST117450REVA) is available to all LightPro Rewards members and includes 12 of Kichler's most popular landscape lighting fixtures plus a battery pack.
