Get Ready for Smart Irrigation Month: Irrigation Audits Help You Sell Upgrades

As property owners and managers look for ways to cut back on monthly expenses, many are looking for ways to save on their irrigation water bills.

Depending on location, landscape irrigation can use up to 40% of the water consumed by a site.

Understanding the opportunities for a more efficient system begins with a water audit.  The purpose of an audit is to determine how much water is being used in landscape irrigation and how efficiently (or inefficiently) it is being applied.

Conducting an audit is not a simple task, and requires training to be done effectively.   It's not as easy as verifying that the equipment is working properly.  Calculations also need to be performed to determine the actual water usage versus what is a recommended usage based on local conditions.

A good audit will examine the system equipment (sprinklers, emitters, controls, pressure regulators, pump, etc.) plus it will include measurable performance testing of the system's overall efficiency.  The auditor supplies the property owner with detailed results and recommendations on how to achieve greater water efficiency.

Auditing is a worthwhile investment that can lead to significant savings.   In the years ahead, water audits are likely to be commonplace throughout our industry.

Begin offering water audits as part of your services now.

Weld-On Shares Tips for Solvent Welding in Hot Weather

Here are some tips to follow when solvent welding PVC pipe and fittings in hot weather:

1. Store solvent cements and primers in a cool or shaded area prior to use.

2. If possible, store pipe and fittings, or at least the ends to be solvent welded, in a shady area before solvent welding.

3. Cool surfaces to be joined by wiping with a damp rag. Be sure that the surface is dry prior to applying the solvent cement.

4. Try solvent welding the joints during the cooler morning hours.

5. Make sure that both surfaces to be joined are still wet with
the solvent cement when putting them together. With larger size pipe, more people on the crew may be necessary.

6. Using a primer and heavier, high viscosity solvent cement
will provide a little more working time. Vigorously shake or stir the solvent cement before use.

7. There can be a greater expansion-contraction factor
affecting the pipe in hot weather. We suggest you follow the
advice of the pipe manufacturer regarding this condition.
Anchored and final connections should be made during the
cooler hours of the day.

Why Backflow Prevention is Essential

Safe drinking water can only be assured when the water flows from the public water distribution system to the end user's potable water system.

Fresh water should only flow one way. It isn't supposed to turn around and travel back to the public water distribution system.

Backflow is the unwanted reverse flow of any substance from an end user's potable water system back into the public water distribution system. In order for backflow to occur, some form of cross-connection must be present. A cross-connection refers to "any unprotected ACTUAL or POTENTIAL connection between a potable water system and any other source through which a substance, other than potable water, may be introduced".

Cross connections can allow pollutants or contaminants to flow back into the public water supply, thereby polluting or contaminating the public water supply.

There are many cases where backflow conditions have occurred that have resulted in severe illness or death. This is why all national plumbing codes and regulations require the installation of approved backflow prevention assemblies and devices. We stock a complete line of backflow devices from Zurn / Wilkins.
