4 Top Apps for Contractor Productivity

Put your mobile device to work to help you manage your valuable resources of productivity and time.   Check out these helpful mobile apps:

Free Accuweather app keeps you informed of the current and future weather events that could impact planning for your crews. Push notifications alert you for severe weather in your area, and live radar is also available.

The TripLog - GPS Mileage Tracker uses GPS technology to track mileage. Turn on GPS, plug in to power, and it automatically tracks the trip. Data is backed up daily and can be used to calculate vehicle fuel efficiency.  Auto-start feature also available. The app also offers the ability to capture printed receipts with your camera and easily store to the cloud.

Turfpath assists with the visual identification of turfgrass pests. It hosts a database of diseases, insects and weeds with a description and image gallery to aid in identification. Turfpath is also integrated with various social networks and allows users to share their own images for help from others in troubleshooting the cause and help with tracking infestation trends.

Keep track of information and notes with Evernote. It helps you organize and save your ideas. The app allows you to take notes, capture photos, write to-do lists and record voice messages that are saved and then later searchable from any of your synched technology - work computer, home computer, tablet.

Note:  These apps have been recommended by other professionals.   We are sharing their success with you.  We have not verified these at CPS.  Consult with your mobile device expert for help in selecting and installing apps.

Landscape Lighting for ALL Seasons

Think landscape lighting is only meant to be enjoyed in the warm-weather seasons? This is far from the truth! Spring, summer, fall or winter - landscape lighting adds value to a home during every season.

The experts at Kichler advise landscape lighting contractors and designers to visualize how each season will impact the homeowner's yard to determine their fixture choices and placement accordingly. If done correctly and in agreement with customers' needs and desires, the year-round enjoyment of their outdoor environment can be greatly improved.

Below are a number of tips for landscape lighting professionals:

  • Snow can impact the effectiveness of accent lighting fixtures. Place the fixtures high in trees to create a downlight or moonlighting effect, or on the trunk of the tree for uplighting.
  • In warmer climates where plant material grows quickly, consider installing accent lights on stems. This way the fixtures will be off the ground and above the plant to prevent the reduction of light output.
  • In areas with heavy snowfall, use a heavy-duty bollard-style fixture and be mindful not to place fragile path lights too close to a driveway or sidewalk. They may become completely hidden or damaged due to snow accumulation and removal.
  • Consider the beam spread and amount of footcandles needed for different seasons. What might work for a tree in late fall or early winter may not work as well for that same tree in full bloom. A tree in the middle of the summer requires much more light than that same tree after its leaves have fallen.

NDS One-Piece, Pre-Assembled Channel Drain Saves You Time & Money

NDS has added new drainage solutions to the company's state-of-the-art 864 Pro Series Channel Drain system with the new Qwik-Turn Radius Coupling. The coupling allows for a perfect channel radius without having to cut or fabricate a turn.  It is used exclusively with the best-selling 864 Pro-Series channel. A lightweight yet durable alternative to polymer concrete products, the new Qwik-Turn Radius Coupling makes creating continuous bends and curves effortless, providing an easy-to-install solution for any curved application.

The patented flexible radius coupling is designed to work in combination with straight 864 Pro Series channel pieces to attain a curved section and is available in both plastic and metal grates. The ends quickly snap into place for a precise fit and, once connected, the Qwik-Turn Radius Coupling remains locked vertically while rotating up to 6 degrees horizontally.

It achieves arcs and full circles with no cutting needed. For a limited time, NDS is offering two FREE couplings so you can see the flexibility yourself.

Regency Works Hard to Make it Easier For You

While many manufacturers are busy making changes to appeal to distributors, Regency Wire has taken a different approach and is focusing on product improvements that appeal to contractors.

"Contractor feedback is what drives our improvement efforts", said Blake Thomas, a Regency Wire inside salesman. "Regency's lighting cable being the softest and most pliable in the industry is a direct result of the market demand we saw for that type of product performance."

Recent product improvements include:

  • New spooling equipment for the decoder, lighting, and multi cables that creates a nice package and aids in un-coiling the wire from the spool on the job site.
  • Using Teflon lubricant to replace unreliable powder lubricants to ensure inside strands do not stick to the outer jacket on multi-wire.
  • Changing the polyethylene used on decoder cable outer jackets to a harder compound that allows for a "score and snap" method of jacket removal.
  • Including a rip cord in all decoder cables to assist in removal of the new outer jacket.

"We've found that when you concentrate on what makes your product easy to use you get happier contractors. Happy contractors are what distributors want. Everyone wins."
