Dear Parents,

This will be a quiet week at Mark Twain - literally, a quiet week!

With STAAR on Tuesday and Wednesday, the campus will be a quiet zone. When you visit us those two days, please be mindful that our third, fourth and fifth grade students will be testing. Students are testing in the C wing (main hallway) and upstairs. There are some changes to the specialists and lunch schedules so please make sure that your child does not forget to bring their lunch. We will not be calling into any rooms during the test administration. Thank you for your continued support during these testing days.

With the weather warming up, it's great to see more parents walking their children to school. Please keep in mind that if you bring a dog with you, it must be on a leash. Dogs cannot be left unattended, or chained to a fence. Pets cannot be brought into the building at any time.

In order for us to maintain a safe and secure school, all community members must act responsibly. It is important that we keep our fire lanes clear of cars - please do not leave your car unattended in a fire lanes.

Keeping our campus secure requires all of us to be vigilant. Entrance gates continue to be propped open - all gates must be closed and secure at all times. If you see an entrance to the school not secured or any other unsafe condition, please report it to the office immediately. Thank you in advance for helping us to maintain a safe and secure campus.

The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) will be administered May 4-12 for students in grades 1-5. It is very important that students are in school and on time during this testing window. Tests will commence each morning immediately following announcements. Please contact Ms. Rawson if you know that your child will be absent during this testing window.

Congratulations to Mr. Martinez's third grade class - they won the National DreamBox Math Challenge and will receive a number of prizes, including iPads. Nice work!

Best wishes for a wonderful week,

Melissa Patin

Principal

Teacher Appreciation Week
April 27 - May 1

Let's make sure the teachers and staff at Mark Twain know how much we appreciate all they do for our children.

We encourage your child - with your room parent's direction - to make cards, bring flowers from your garden, share baked goods, or something that is special to your teacher.

The PTO will sponsor home made "treats" each day of the week.
  • For Monday the PTO will have home made muffins for the staff.  We will need about nine dozen muffins to serve with fruit and juice.  Please sign-up here if you can bring a dozen HOME BAKED muffins on Monday, April 27, by 7:30 am.
  • For the Tuesday treat from the PTO we will host a dessert bar at lunch in the teacher's lounge.  Please sign-up here to make and bring a special dessert on Tuesday, April 28 by 10:00 am. We will have a table set with plates and utensils for staff to enjoy their treats.
Hearts of Appreciation: Heart_of_appreciation

The "Hearts of Appreciation" are a way for students to tell teachers and staff what they mean to them.  Look for a copy in your student's red folder. Please take the time to decorate and cut out the heart. Fill as many hearts as you wish with words of thanks, poems, or pictures for a special teacher, favorite ancillary teacher, and support staff member at school.

Cut out the hearts and return them in your red folder or to the PTO workroom. The hearts will be displayed throughout the building during Teacher Appreciation Week. Extra hearts are in the PTO workroom or click here to download a copy.

A third grade teacher in Denver has sparked a viral online conversation with her profoundly simple, extremely powerful classroom idea. She asked her students to complete a very straight-forward writing prompt:

I wish my teacher knew ________________________.

The answers broke her heart and opened some vitally important discussions in her classroom and now, in schools all over the country:

As we wind our way toward the end of yet another school year in classrooms, on teams, on PTOs and PTAs, in faith communities, and at our own kitchen tables, let's consider asking our children what they think we -- the adults in their lives -- need to know for them to feel understood.

And, let's listen.
