Dear Mark Twain Families,

Life...short word, easy to spell, countless meanings; Oxford says, "the

condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death". That is pretty deep and long-winded.

Many of you know that a week ago my life was in question and the outcome of another's life was in my hands. Scary, right? Many people, all over the world have to face that EVERYDAY. Whether it is the brave men and women of military and police forces all over the world, or those who are caught in the middle. Kuddos to all of them. As a country boy from East Texas, I can tell you it is no fun. In those six or so minutes that I was rolling around with my new found friend, many things went through my head. First I thought, "is this real?"... two seconds later I thought, "it is real, and where are my kids and how am I go to keep them safe."

The new dent in my truck from my hunting trip, whether the Texans were going to win, whether we were going to raise enough money to build a new playground at Mark Twain...instantly all became very, very insignificant. Keep them safe, stay in control, keep them safe. Have I been a good father? Keep them safe. Did I tell them I loved them today? Keep them safe. Have I spent enough time with them? Keep them safe. In the end, for whatever reason, I was able to uphold my end of the bargain, but it made me realize that everyone needs a plan.

We were lucky (so was the bad guy, because I didn't want my kids to live through that). Please, please have a plan. I walk each of my little ones to class every morning; I give them a kiss and tell them that I do love them. It may embarrass them, but I am more resolved than ever to continue, because that is what "Life" means to me.

I can't thank the community enough for your outpouring of concern and well wishes. We are blessed to be part of this great neighborhood, and I am proud to give Twain one more year of service as PTO President.

Thank you for your ongoing support whether through volunteer hours, donations or helping to ensure our children are successful in school. It is greatly appreciated.

Go Twain Tigers!
