Dear Mark Twain Community,

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Back to School Rumble.  It was a grand success and such a positive way to launch the school year.  The partnership between the Mark Twain staff and families is built upon cooperation, trust and a common goal of providing a wonderful educational experience for each and every child.  This community is a special place, and I am honored to be the principal at Mark Twain.

The early days of school are full of meetings, messages and what seems to be an endless stack of forms to be filled out and returned. The amount of information to read can be overwhelming, but what we send home is important.  We hope you will take the time to look through the First Day packet carefully.  Please try to return the paper work in a timely fashion so that all the necessary information can be processed.  If you need help navigating any of these beginning of the year procedures, please let us know.  Your teacher is the best source of information, but the office staff and faculty are also available to answer your questions and help us out.

The teachers at Mark Twain are confident, well-trained and enthusiastic about the school year.  We continue to review and improve our IB curriculum to meet the needs of all of our children and to ensure relevance and engagement.  This summer we attended IB professional development with topics including inquiry, exhibition and concept based instruction.

In August, most of our kindergarten teachers attended the Rice University School Literacy Project training.   When teachers reported for duty, all participated in Literacyby3 training to the launch the HISD Literacy initiative.   Teachers also attended training on the new textbook adoptions GoMath! and Science Fusion.  Such a high level of participation in summer trainings is evident of our commitment to providing quality instruction to the children at Mark Twain. 

It took a lot of planning, collaboration and hard work to get everything up and running, but I am happy to say that we are ready to start the school year.  A special thank you goes out to our teachers and staff, Mr. Tony Houck, our PTO president, and the many parent volunteers that assisted in readying the school for the new year. 

As we head into the school year, I encourage you to reach out to me or your child's teacher if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions.   Together we can make this another successful year!

Estimada comunidad de la Escuela Mark Twain,

Bienvenidos al ciclo escolar 2014-2015. Nos alegró mucho ver a tantas familias en la función de regreso a clases Back to School Rumble, que fue todo un éxito y una manera muy positiva de iniciar el nuevo ciclo. La alianza que existe entre el plantel de Mark Twain y las familias se forjó sobre una base de cooperación, confianza y el objetivo común de brindar a cada alumno una experiencia educativa maravillosa. Esta comunidad es un sitio muy especial, y ser la directora de Mark Twain es un honor para mí.

Al comienzo de cada año académico hay muchas reuniones, mensajes y una pila aparentemente interminable de formularios para llenar y entregar. La cantidad de información que hay que leer puede ser un tanto abrumadora, pero todo lo que les enviamos es importante. Esperamos que examinen detenidamente el paquete del primer día de clases y entreguen a tiempo los formularios con los datos requeridos para completar el proceso administrativo. Si necesitan ayuda, avísennos. El maestro de su hijo es la mejor fuente de información, pero el personal de la oficina y otros miembros del plantel docente también están a la orden para contestar sus preguntas y ayudar.

Los maestros de Mark Twain están muy capacitados y comienzan este ciclo con confianza y entusiasmo. Continuamos revisando y mejorando nuestro currículo IB para satisfacer las necesidades de todos los alumnos y asegurarnos de que el contenido sea relevante y motivador. Este verano participamos en talleres de IB donde se abordaron temas como la investigación, la exhibición y la instrucción basada en conceptos.

En agosto, la mayoría de nuestros maestros de Kindergarten asistieron a un taller de lectoescritura presentado por la Universidad Rice, y al reintegrarse en la escuela, todos  participaron en una sesión informativa del programa Literacy By 3, una iniciativa que HISD acaba de implementar. Además, asistieron a capacitaciones de los nuevos programas de matemáticas y ciencias adoptados por el estado, GoMath! y Science Fusion. Este nivel de participación en talleres de capacitación es evidencia de nuestro compromiso a ofrecer una educación de calidad a los alumnos de Mark Twain.

Poner todo en marcha requirió mucha planificación, colaboración y dedicación, y me complace comunicarles que estamos listos para el nuevo año. Agradezco de manera especial a nuestros maestros y al personal de la escuela, al Sr. Tony Houck, presidente del PTO, y a todos los padres voluntarios que nos ayudaron a preparar la escuela.

Al comenzar el nuevo ciclo, les recuerdo que cuando tengan alguna pregunta, inquietud o sugerencia pueden comunicarse conmigo o con el maestro de su hijo. Juntos lograremos tener otro exitoso año escolar.

College Colors Day is an annual celebration to promote the spirit that makes the college experience great by encouraging people across America to wear apparel of their favorite college or university throughout the day. College Colors Day coincides with the kick-off of intercollegiate athletics and strives to advocate higher education through increased public awareness, and celebrates the achievements of colleges and universities, acknowledging their fundamental importance.

West University Softball Association (WUSA), the largest recreational girls' softball league in Texas, is proud to announce the opening of the fall softball season.  

Fall Ball is WUSA's "off season" program. It is less structured than the spring season and standings are not kept. Fall player registration is available at wusa.org and will close on September 2, 2014. Players are encouraged to register early. The season will begin on September 7, 2014. Games will be played Sunday afternoons from September 14 to November 16, 2014. 

Fall Ball is for girls ages 6-14. All girls who register will be placed on a team. There is no tryout to participate.
