Dear Mark Twain Parents and Families,

Can you believe it!! The last week of school is here! It seems like yesterday, I was walking Presley up the foreboding stairs to the third grade hall . . . A big step in the life of an eight year old . . . Maybe a bigger step for marginally overprotective parents.  We survived. She did too.  Our baby has made it through with flying colors...stronger, smarter, more balanced and, sad to say, a year older. As is her brother, Payne. And our, youngest Barrett, who will grace these halls next year in Kinder (beware K teachers!) I could not be happier with the education my children are receiving. The friends they are making. The staff that is teaching and protecting them. What a great community and elementary school. I know all of you have heard this all of your life..."Enjoy this time with your kids, it goes by too fast." They weren't lying; it really does.

Take the time this summer to spend time with your kids. Read a good book together. Walk in the trees together.  Make a point to have family dinners together. Make the time for you children. It goes by too fast.

Have a great summer!!!

LOCKS OF LOVE

LOCKS OF LOVE/PANTENE BEAUTIFUL LENGTHS EVENT

TODAY - MAY 27, 2014

Our Locks of Love/Pantene Beautiful Lengths event is here!!!

Please note: we will be donating hair to BOTH  organizations.

Pantene Beutiful Lengths Hair Locks of Love requires a 10" minimum; whereas, Pantene Beautiful Lengths requires an 8" minimum.  Hairdressers will be coming to Mark Twain to measure, cut, and style hair.  Please join us for this amazing event as Mark Twain students, teachers, moms, sisters, and friends join together in making a HUGE difference in a child's/woman's life.

Make a difference in a child's life and join us in donating to Locks of Love www.LocksOfLove.org or Pantene Beautiful Lengths www.pantene.com/BeautifulLengths.

Who can donate?  We are looking for Mark Twain girls, their moms, sisters, teachers and staff to donate their beautiful locks for a wonderful cause.

WhenToday - Tues, May 27th at 3: 15 in the Mark Twain Cafeteria

How?  You will need a minimum of 8" of hair to make a donation.  You can specify which organization you would like to donate to or we can select for you.

Why?  Because there are thousands of children and women who suffer from long-term hair loss and we have the ability to make a difference. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides hair pieces for children.  Pantene Beautiful Lengths, partnered with the American Cancer Society, provides free wigs to women suffering from hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment.  So if you have hair and it grows, you can help!

Ready to commit?  If you are 100% committed to participating in this event, please email your name, age and phone number to Ilse Rassin or Luisa Puerto.  There are ways to help even if you choose not to donate hair so send us an email if you'd like to help.

Questions?  More info to come as the date approaches, but if you have questions now, please email Ilse Rassin (ilserassin@gmail.com ) or Luisa Puerto (alpuertogomez@gmail.com ).

EVERY SUMMER HAS A STORY
2014 Summer Reading

Mark Twain Parents

Information and reading logs for HISD's new Summer Reading Program, Every Summer Has A Story,

will be included in this week's Tuesday folder. HISD has partnered with Capstone Publishing, and Capstone is providing 5,500 digital e-books for the use of HISD students throughout the summer via their website, www.MyOn.com.

Starting this past week and continuing through Thursday, most students will have logged on to the MyON website and taken a brief Lexile quiz that will establish their reading level. This information also allows the website to compile suggested titles and reading lists for the student.

If for some reason your child has not been provided with an opportunity to login to the MyOn website, you can do it in the convenience of your home. All your child needs is their Istation login information, and their eight digit birthday, without slashes. (i.e., 02242009 if your student's birthday was Feb 24, 2009), which will serve as their password. Most students are familiar with their iStation login. Your child's teacher should have this information readily available.

Rice University is also helping HISD by promoting Summer Reading with participation in a great event in the Fall for our summer readers, Click Here to see the attachment for more information. Both the Houston Public Library and the Harris County Library are holding Summer Reading Programs, please encourage students to participate in these as well. All of the needed information will be on the  Library Services Summer Reading page.

Mark Twain students are challenged to read a minimum of 5 books during the summer to prevent summer learning loss.

There are many resources on Library Services website. You will find recommended READING LISTS for summer and links to Houston Summer Reading programs, including the Houston Public Library Summer Reading Program , Half Price Books Summer Reading, Barnes & Noble Summer Reading, and the  United Way of Greater Houston's 211 Summer Initiative (Click Here for United Way Flier). All of these programs can be accessed from the HISD Library Resources page.

Thanks again for your help and support with this important program!

NURSE'S NOTES

Dear Parents,

As many of you know I am pregnant and am due to deliver soon.  It is likely that I will be absent for the last two weeks of school.  We are working diligently to ensure that Mark Twain's students will continue to have their health care needs attended to while I am gone.

I want to thank all of the parents who have been so friendly and supportive during my first year as a school nurse.  Particularly those of you who have been responsive regarding my concerns for your child's health.

Even as this school year comes to a close, we have already started preparations for next school year.  Here are some end of year and next year prep duties for you to attend to.

  • If your child has medications in the Nurses Office please pick those up during the last week of school or before 3pm on the last day of school.
  • Parents of 5th graders who had medications for camp please pick those up ASAP.
  • If your child will require medications to be on hand in the Nurses Office for next school year please pick up the appropriate forms now.  That way you and your Doctor can work on those during the summer.  Below are some examples of the forms you typically require.
    • If your child has Food Allergies, you will need the "Food Allergy Action Plan" form and the "Physician's Request for Special Dietary Accommodations" form.
    • If your child has Asthma, you will need the "Asthma Action Plan/IHP" form.
    • If your child has a general medication need such as ADHD medication, you will need the "Healthcare Provider's Request for Administration of Medication at School Building During School Hours" form.

Please recall that the Doctors order for the medication must be completed just as a Doctors order to a nurse in a hospital would be ie Benadryl 25mg, by mouth, every 4 hours PRN for symptoms of mild allergic reaction.

Also, recall that even non-precription drugs, like Benadryl, do require a prescription label from the pharmacy.

  • If your child is still delinquent on their immunizations, please get that taken care of prior to the beginning of next school year.  I will be following up, again, in the fall semester.
  • If your child failed their vision or hearing screening with me, please ensure that they are seen by a Doctor during the summer.  I will be following up, again, in the fall semester.

Thank you for your time and attention,

Andrea T. Hill RN
