May 20, 2014

Dear Parents,

During the spring months, HISD has been reviewing the district budget and has presented a plan for board approval. The focus of the new funding formula was to improve equity across magnet programs and to increase transparency in how magnet programs are funded. The current proposal includes $100.00 per student for Mark Twain with our magnet program being categorized as "other." The new funding formula will be phased in over the next two years. For the 2014-2015 year it would be phased in at a rate of 25% of the change. This will allow some time for us to adjust to the funding change. Although the proposal includes a significant change to our magnet funding, I will not be closing any positions for the upcoming school year nor will any of our programs be compromised.   We are proud of our magnet program and the work that we do at Mark Twain. The Literary Development Center (LDC) will continue to thrive even as we tighten our belts. I will continue to update the Mark Twain community as we head into the summer months.

SUMMER READING
2014 Summer Reading Every Summer Has A Story

HISD's summer reading program has a new name - Every Summer Has a Story!  Students only need to read five (5) books to be successful.  To ensure their program's success, HISD has partnered with Capstone Publishing to provide 4,000 enhanced digital e-books for HISD students through their online reading platform, myON.

Teachers will begin the enrollment process on Monday, May 19, which and will necessitate the students to logon and take an inventory placement and Lexile assessment. Teachers may need assistance from parents to enroll students before school ends.

Every Summer Has a Story promotional materials will be distributed the week of May 26 and will include a student reading log and parent information regarding myOn. The summer reading log will include the student's login information (See Generic Form That You Will Receive With Student's login Info).

There are other platforms where students can enjoy reading digital e-books on Follett e-shelf and MackinVia. These apps are available on smart phones, including iPhones, IPads, Androids and other digital devices. Details on using these sites will be available at marktwainmediacenter.weebly.com.

Also, please note that information is now available regarding the 2014-2015 Name That Book contests, including the Name That Book reading list for both Kindergarten - Grade 2 and Grades 3 - 6.

Summer reading is critical because it prevents summer reading loss. According to the research, children from high and low-income families make similar gains in reading during the academic year. But children of poverty fall behind in the summer a little more each year, until the difference is huge.

To address summer reading loss, HISD encourages students to participate in summer reading programs.  Additional information is available on the  Library Services Summer Reading website and on the Brochure Attached Here

Of course it would be great for students to complete more than one reading program!   Other summer reading programs in Houston are the Houston Public Library Summer Reading Program , Half Price Books Summer Reading, Barnes & Noble Summer Reading, and the  United Way of Greater Houston's 211 Summer Initiative (Click Here for United Way Flier). All of these programs can be accessed from the HISD Library Resources page.

Rice University is partnering with HISD schools to help motivate students by recognizing all students who complete the goal of reading five books and their Librarians at Rice University's Football game on Saturday, September 20th.   Additionally, students and librarians will have a fun fellowship day for the family(Click Here For More Details on Rice University Incentive).

Check out Camp Wonderopolis for summer reading opportunities.  Be sure to get your Twain Tiger's username and password for Istation access over the summer.

By promoting summer reading, we can help all children have a safe and productive summer while preventing summer learning loss. Encourage your parents to read with their child and talk about books. Parents of young children can point out unusual words and discuss interesting pictures when reading with their child. Engaging in recreational reading promotes literacy development.

NURSE'S NOTES

Dear Parents,

As many of you know I am pregnant and am due to deliver soon.  It is likely that I will be absent for the last two weeks of school.  We are working diligently to ensure that Mark Twain's students will continue to have their health care needs attended to while I am gone.

I want to thank all of the parents who have been so friendly and supportive during my first year as a school nurse.  Particularly those of you who have been responsive regarding my concerns for your child's health.

Even as this school year comes to a close, we have already started preparations for next school year.  Here are some end of year and next year prep duties for you to attend to.

  • If your child has medications in the Nurses Office please pick those up during the last week of school or before 3pm on the last day of school.
  • Parents of 5th graders who had medications for camp please pick those up ASAP.
  • If your child will require medications to be on hand in the Nurses Office for next school year please pick up the appropriate forms now.  That way you and your Doctor can work on those during the summer.  Below are some examples of the forms you typically require.
    • If your child has Food Allergies, you will need the "Food Allergy Action Plan" form and the "Physician's Request for Special Dietary Accommodations" form.
    • If your child has Asthma, you will need the "Asthma Action Plan/IHP" form.
    • If your child has a general medication need such as ADHD medication, you will need the "Healthcare Provider's Request for Administration of Medication at School Building During School Hours" form.

Please recall that the Doctors order for the medication must be completed just as a Doctors order to a nurse in a hospital would be ie Benadryl 25mg, by mouth, every 4 hours PRN for symptoms of mild allergic reaction.

Also, recall that even non-precription drugs, like Benadryl, do require a prescription label from the pharmacy.

  • If your child is still delinquent on their immunizations, please get that taken care of prior to the beginning of next school year.  I will be following up, again, in the fall semester.
  • If your child failed their vision or hearing screening with me, please ensure that they are seen by a Doctor during the summer.  I will be following up, again, in the fall semester.

Thank you for your time and attention,

Andrea T. Hill RN

Calling All Elementary/Middle School Girls! Lacrosse For Grades 3-8

No Experience Necessary!

Is your daughter interested in playing girls lacrosse? Pershing Middle School is offering girls in 3rd-8th grades the opportunity to learn how to play lacrosse and participate in tournaments against other Houston-area teams. Currently, we have three separate age groups:

A Team
experienced girls between the ages of 12-14 (7th-8th grade)
B Team
new girls between the ages of 11-14 (5th-8th grade)
Young Guns Team
new and experienced girls between the ages of 9-11 (3rd-5th grade)

Come join one of Houston's fastest-growing sports and have your daughter participate with other girls in her age division. Our teams start learning and practicing in August, and continue throughout the school year. Lacrosse season officially begins in January and concludes the beginning of May.

Top three reasons why girls lacrosse is fantastic:

1) Helps promote teamwork among girls;

2) Is a positive, supportive social environment;

3) Provides a healthy, active hobby for young girls.

We are offering a girls lacrosse clinic August 16-17 from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm at Pershing Middle School (Stella Link and Bellaire Blvd.). For more information or to ask questions, please contact Susan Krause at pershinglaxgirls@gmail.com

+SNAX
Add a description
One +Voice at a time

The basketball team was off to a pretty good start but the referees were missing some calls, and it was getting a little rough out on the court.

"Are you blind? He lost an arm!" bellowed a dad from the stands, hands cupped around his mouth for full acoustical impact. "Hey REF! I said he LOST an ARM!"  Every time he yelled, the players turned toward him, clearly distracted.

The team mom sat near the dad, a fellow parent, in the stands. She was as uncomfortable about the yelling as she was unsure of what to do about it.

Then, she got an idea. She pulled out her cell phone. A few minutes later, when the dad yelled again, she tapped him on the shoulder, smiled, and then flashed him the back of her phone, which had a +Works sticker on it- a simple blue and black positive sign.

"What's that?" the dad asked.

"It's a program about being positive in tough situations," she said. "Like this one."

"Oh," said the dad. "That sounds interesting. Tell me more about that at half-time ..."  And she did, beginning a conversation about +PlayWell and +Works that extended over several subsequent games. In the end, it was a win-win for everyone:  for the team mom who found her +Voice, for the dad who chose to stop yelling, and for the kids who were ultimately given what they needed - the opportunity to just play.

Change comes one +Voice at a time.

team members and supporters. We believe change comes one +Voice at a
