Dear Parents,

Welcome to 2014!    This month marks the beginning of a new year and the teachers spent today happily preparing for the return of the children.   The spring semester is going to be very busy so please remember to check the school calendars located on Living Tree and the website www.houstonisd.org/Twaines.

In December the Science Fair packets (Packet attached here) were made available on Living Tree and in the Twain Times. The proposals for students in grades 3-5 are due today and the projects are due February 21st.  Ms. Rawson has some resources available if your child needs help getting started.  Ms. Reese is also available to answer questions or provide guidance to the children.  Our Science Night is scheduled for Thursday, March 13th.

Ms. Rawson and I visited Dr. Rask over the holidays and she was thrilled by the cards that the students and families sent to her.  She was touched by the kindness and generosity that the Mark Twain family has shown her during her illness.  Dr. Rask looked great and was in good spirits!

Some additional dates to note:

  • Friday, January 10 - Report Cards
  • Friday, January 10- Spelling Bee for Grades 3-5 at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria
  • January 20 - No School
  • January 29 - Early Dismissal
  • January 30 - Art Night

YEARBOOK PHOTOS NEEDED
YearbookDear Twain Parents:

The Twain Yearbook needs your photos!

Please, ASAP -- electronically upload any photos you have already taken throughout this first part of the school year into Mark Twain Elementary's Community Shutterfly site! Then, as you take photos at future events, upload those into that same Shutterfly site.

Please submit your photos to the Twain Elementary Yearbook's Shutterfly share site:

https://marktwainyearbook.shutterfly.com/

Password: tigers

To add pictures you'll need a Shutterfly account (setting up an account is free, quick & easy).

Please label your album to indicate Grade and Class/Teacher OR Event. Without the label information, we can't use your photos!

Thank you! Laura Solitare, lgsolitare@gmail.com

SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT - REQUIRED FOR 3RD-5TH AND OPTIONAL FOR K-2ND
Science Fair With Eye ProtectionGreetings! It's that time again; time to get to work on a Science Fair project!

Start by reading through the packet (Click Here For Packet) to get an idea of what will be expected. The first step in the process is for students to come up with a good, testable question and fill out the Project Proposal form.

It is a good idea to get approval for the question, before spending too much time working on the project. (It's never fun for a student to spend a lot of time working on a project only to find out it doesn't fit into the guidelines.)

Near the end there is page full of resources. Many of them have ideas to help students get started; I especially like www.sciencebuddies.org for help in selecting a topic and/or question.

The deadline for students to turn in their project proposal form with their question/problem for approval is January 7th.  IF you forgot, please get the proposal turned in as soon as possible!  The proposal can be found on the last page of the packet or by clicking on this Page Link.

The experiment phase of the project can take anywhere from several hours to several weeks, so best to get started soon!

Projects are due February 21st. Like last year, the top three projects from each classroom will go on to the judging phase.

Top projects will be judged the next week, 5th grade on the 25th, 4th grade on the 26th, and 3rd grade on the 27th. During this time K-2nd will display class projects in their hallways.

I plan to offer an "open lab" after school a few days each week for students who need additional help with their projects, details about how this will work will follow when I have a better idea what the need is. Please feel free to stop by or email me or the classroom teacher with any questions you might have.

I am excited to see all the wonderful and creative projects that students produce this year!!

Happy Holidays,

Becky Reese

PARENT ENRICHMENT
Book Club
Parent Enrichment Book club THIS Thursday, January 9th 8:15 AM in the cafeteria.

This month we will be discussing Duct Tape Parenting by Vicki Hoefle.

There's a new set of 3Rs for our kids-respect, responsibility, and resilience-to better prepare them for life in the real world. Once developed, these skills let kids take charge, and let parents step back, to the benefit of all. Casting hover mothers and helicopter parents aside, Vicki Hoefle encourages a different, counter-intuitive-yet much more effective-approach: for parents to sit on their hands, stay on the sidelines, even if duct tape is required, so that the kids step up. Duct Tape Parenting gives parents a new perspective on what it means to be effective, engaged parents and to enable kids to develop confidence through solving their own problems. This is not a book about the parenting strategy of the day-what the author calls "Post-It Note Parenting"-but rather a relationship-based guide to span all ages and stages of development. Witty, straight-shooting Hoefle addresses frustrated parents everywhere who are ready to raise confident, capable children to go out in the world.
As with all parent education events, you do NOT need to have finished or even to have read the book to participate.  Come share a cup of coffee and some interesting conversation with your fellow Twain parents.

For more information, contact Tonya Crombie at tonyacrombie@comcast.net for more information.

ART A LA CARTE
Art A La CarteHello, Parents!

Please join me in the cafeteria after morning drop-off for Art A La Carte tutorials on Thursday, January 9th  for K-2, as well as 3-5. Looking forward to seeing my Volunteer Coordinators, AALC volunteer teachers for January, as well as any interested parents! It's a brand new year for celebrating art with our children!

TWAIN LIBRARY HEROES

Adopt A Mark Twain Elementary Shelf The library is looking for anyone who might have the time to come to the library and shelve books as well as read the shelves. This is important that the library stay as organized as possible in order to serve the needs of teacher and students.

Anyone who can adopt a section of the library and read the shelves for that section would be a library hero! Take a few minutes a couple of times a week and give it a go! I cannot stress enough how important it is for the shelves to be in order , and this requires requires they be "read'"!

New faces are always welcome! Thank for all of your support! Glenn Deering, GDeering@houstonisd.org, Library Media Specialist, MLS, 713-295-5230

TWAIN TRIATHLON
TriatholonDue to the level of interest from Twain families, we are going to have another week of registration for the Twain Triathlon. Registration will take place in the school rotunda at drop-off and pick-up times Jan. 14 - Jan. 16, and drop-off only on Fri., Jan. 17. This will be your FINAL opportunity to register. This event requires us to coordinate and purchase numbers, timers, and a schedule of start times so unfortunately, no late registrations will be accepted.

In order to compete among grade levels, not just individually, encourage other families to join. Each class needs 5 participants to develop a team!

As you head into the holidays, we would like to remind you to not only focus on the cherished time with family and friends, but also on ways to stay healthy and active! With the abundance of food and delicious treats at hand, we encourage you to get outside and ride your bikes, go for a walk or run, engage in a game of football rather than just watching it on TV, or just dance!

Also, don't forget to take your sponsorship forms to your family members while you visit and ask them to help support you and your school in what will be a great accomplishment! Extra sponsorship forms may be found in the drawer labeled Triathlon in the parent workroom if needed!

Thanks so much and Happy Thanksgiving,
Your Triathlon Team
The Triathlon will take place on Sunday, March 9.  For questions contact Monica Agosta at magosta69@gmail.com.

What are you driving?

She picked up her kids and a teammate from track practice. A few minutes into the ride home, one of her kids began making fun of someone else on the team, causing the other two to laugh in agreement, as tweens do. Before someone else could pile on, she intervened.

"This is a positive car, and that kid's not here to defend himself," she said. "So we are not going to talk about him, OK?" In her mirror, she saw the teammate slump down in his seat and look with exasperation out the window. His body language screamed, "Get me out of this car!"

"Here's the thing," she continued, looking at him in her mirror. "The good news is when you're not here we're not going to talk about you." She then watched him physically relax. He looked happier. He got it. He liked it.

"So, you're safe in my car and in my house - whether you're with us or not," she said.  "OK?"

"Yes ma'am," he said. "OK."
