Dear Mark Twain Families,

I can't believe it is November already! This time of the year, I am so grateful for my friends and family, for the many freedoms we have in this country (don't forget to vote today!) and for the opportunity for my children to go to such a wonderful school like Mark Twain Elementary. In the spirit of giving, please remember to bring canned corn, green beans or shelf sustainable juice for our Thanksgiving Food Drive. All donations will be collected through November 14th and will benefit Houston based Kids' Meals.

Everyone had a great adventure at "King Arthur's Court," during Math Night on Tuesday! We had a wonderful turnout of students and families that came for games, prizes, races and treats. I want to extend a BIG thank you to co-chairs, Irene Chang and Megan Rose, and all the volunteers and teachers for organizing the event.

I want to give a BIG thank you to Chrissy Bennett d'Abaza and Dawn Koenig for organizing the annual sponsor breakfast on Friday morning. On behalf of the PTO, I would like to extend our deepest appreciation to all the Corporate Sponsors and Friends & Family donors for your continued support and generous monetary donations. We raised nearly $80,000 through both campaigns which support our IB program, technology in the classrooms, the Outdoor Garden and Track projects, library books and much, much more! You are all part of the Mark Twain family and your commitment makes our school a wonderful place for our children to learn and grow. I also want to thank our amazing teachers for getting the students to participate, and for the beautiful artwork and thank you letters from the kids.

Magnet Awareness week is this week. We are still looking for volunteers to help host tours. Look for a Sign up on your Livingtree.

A few reminders for the week:

  • November 7th Parent Enrichment - Parent Book Club: Safe Kids, Smart Parents by Rebecca Bailey
  • The Dad's Club Campout is this Friday, November 8th. Please see details below and sign-up on-line. What a great way for your kids to spend quality time with their Dad, and for Moms to have a relaxing night! My wife loves driving by and seeing all the tents over the schoolyard. Thanks to Kelly James for organizing such an anticipated event.
  • Please mark your calendars for the next PTO meeting, which will be on Wednesday, November 13th at 6:30pm in the library. I hope to see you there!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween and enjoyed trick or treating with your neighbors, family and kids! Be safe and have a great week... thank you for all you do for our school and kids!

As with all parent education events, you do NOT need to have finished or even to have read the book to participate.  Come share a cup of coffee and some interesting conversation with your fellow Twain parents.

Ready to commit?  If you are 100% committed to participating in this event, please email your name, age and phone number to Ilse Rassin.

Interested?   Great! You have plenty of time to think about it while your hair grows. Plus, there will be ways to help even if you choose not to donate hair.

LATTE AND LECTURE SERIES

Tiny Boxwood's No. 5

9:30 - 11:00am

Tuesdays-  November 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th

Limited Space: 20 Seats Available

Cost: $65.00 (Includes Positive Discipline Workbook)

Question and Answer with Small Group Discussions

You may need a "Latte and Lecture Series" if...

· You had rather eat dry cereal again for dinner than take your children to the grocery store.

· You have ever received a note from your child's teacher that says: "Needs to improve self control."

· You have caught yourself screaming, "Stop yelling at your little brother," and failed to notice the irony of your statement.

· You believe you are the only parent whose child hits, bites, or has full body tantrums in Target.

But seriously, keep in mind that there is no such thing as a "perfect child" or even a "perfect parent."  Take comfort, for with the right set of "go to" strategies and tools you can make big changes and turn things around in a relatively short period of time.  I see it happen all the time.  Our goal is less stress and more joy.

Some topics covered will be:

·         Age Appropriate... Doesn't Always Make it Acceptable

·         Partner With Your Preschool Teacher

·         Misbehavior as a "gift"

·         Proper and Effective use of Time-Out

·         Natural Consequences

·         Mommy Time-Out

·         Car Talk: A Classroom on Wheels

·         Establishing their Responsibility

·         How to Build Consistency

·         How to Reward and Praise Effectively

·         How to use Power Words

·         How to Create Your Family's Discipline Team

·         How to's on Reminders, Warnings, and Consequences

·         Your Inside the House and Outside the House Plans

·         How to Motivate Good Behavior

+SNAX

The schools' music program was compulsory for elementary students - with a parent expected to attend weekly lessons and supervise daily practice. But something was amiss. The two leading music teachers' classes too often ended with children - and parents - in tears. The problem: the teachers were long-time friends of the headmistress, whom everyone in the school loved, so no one felt comfortable speaking up.

It was awful. Seeking a way to keep their children from being humiliated in class, the parents begrudgingly supported an expensive, after-school music tutoring system that accumulated years of community resentment.

And then one year, a newly-elected PTO mom took action.  She approached the Assistant Principal and asked for support in getting the undiscussable on the table. Her plan: invite three moms to peacefully present the community's concerns directly to the teachers. The Assistant Principal said yes, and the meeting was set.

The PTO mom opened the meeting, and one by one, the moms shared their and their fellow parents' concerns.  They were polite but very clear about the community's strong desire for change.  One of the music teachers burst into tears, apologized, and vowed to take the comments on board - which she ultimately did, with success. The second teacher sat stone-faced and barely said a word. She left the school to teach music prodigies.

--------------

Reflect on how information and feelings flow in your family, school, or organization.  Are people able to openly and peacefully air their concerns?  If not, how can you rally a peaceful group to discuss that undiscussable?  And remember, it's how you go about that process that will determine its success.
