Dear Parents,
After a long, hot summer we welcomed our students to the new school year. Yesterday went very smoothly. This first week we will work to establish procedures and expectations with the children. In the first day packet you received a lot of information and many forms that must be filled out and returned to the school. Please try to return this information as quickly as possible.
Reminders:
- School begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. with classroom doors opening at 7:50 a.m. If you arrive before this time, please wait in the front rotunda or the cafeteria. Students that are dropped off will need to go to the cafeteria where there will be supervision.
- Grade Level Coffees at 8:00 a.m.:
- Kindergarten - Wednesday, August 28th
- First & Second Grade - Thursday, August 29th
- Third, Fourth & Fifth Grade - Friday, August 30
- Friday, August 30th - Free Dress Day (College Colors Day - students are encouraged to wear their favorite college shirts)
- Allergy Policy - Please make sure that the classroom teacher and school nurse Mrs. Andrea Hill are aware of any allergies that your child has. We do have nut free lunch tables designated for each class to ensure that if a child has nut allergies they will not be at a table with a child that has a nut product in their lunch. We do not restrict others from having peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for their lunch!
- Breakfast in the classroom - at 7:45 each morning breakfast trays are available in the hallways and children are allowed to eat in the classrooms. If you arrive before 7:45 am, students are able to eat in the cafeteria. School does begin promptly at 8:00 so we encourage you to arrive early if your child needs breakfast.
- Student Handbook -please take a few minutes to look at the handbook. If you have questions, please contact me at mpatin@houstonisd.org.
- Dismissal Reminders - parents/guardians may pick up children by driving through the car pool lane or by walking onto the campus and picking up from the classrooms. We do not allow parents to go the rooms before 3:10 for kindergarten and 3:15 for all other grades. If you allow your child to walk home, we need a note or email from you stating that they have permission to walk home. Extended Day students can be checked out at the front desk.
- The Living Tree is a new system for streamlining communication. If you didn't get a chance to provide your classroom teacher with an email address, please do so. Once you are in the system the teacher can easily send communications to the class. It also allows for the school administration to send out messages to all of the school community or to groups within the community. In the Tuesday folder that goes out on September 4th, there will be a flyer that explains in more detail The Living Tree.
Have a wonderful week.

| PTO PRESIDENT'S LETTER | |
Dear Mark Twain Families,
Welcome back to another GREAT year at Mark Twain Elementary! I would like to extend a special greeting to those of you who are new to our school this year. We are excited to have you and your children join our dynamic community. I would also like to warmly welcome the Mark Twain teachers and staff, our principal, Mrs. Melissa Patin, and new assistant principal, Ms. Michelle Rawson. They have all been working diligently this summer to ensure everything is ready for our children when they return to the hustle and bustle of the Mark Twain hallways.
Servicing one of the "go to" communities in Houston, Mark Twain is busting at the seams. During the summer, two temporary buildings were added to the campus which added four new classrooms. The school is opening one new kindergarten, two new first grades and one new fifth grade to accommodate our growing numbers. To make room in the main building, four of the Ancillary Classes have been relocated to the "Cottages." As the parent representative that sat in on most of the interviews for the new positions this summer, I can tell you that the new additions are going to fit right in with the great group of teachers that we have at Twain.
Mark Twain PTO Membership includes every Mark Twain Parent - you are a member! Membership is free but it is up to you as parents to get involved, stay informed and support your child's school and education. Those who donate $10 to the PTO will receive a hard copy the directory; the online directory will be available to all. The PTO is a key support system to our principal, teachers and staff that positively impacts the educational experience for our children. As members of the PTO and as a collective group of families, we will make this year at Mark Twain a great success!
We invite you to go on-line at http://marktwaindirectory.org/ to register today to become a member and complete your information for the student directory. If you are able, we encourage you to make a monetary donation through the Friends and Family Campaign. Your participation, whether through volunteer hours, monetary donations and/or making certain your children are successful, is vital to building a strong community at Mark Twain.
The Mark Twain PTO also supports families by providing the following ways to stay informed: the Mark Twain Directory, the "Twain Times" weekly electronic newsletters, with handouts in the weekly Red folders and a new communication tool called Livingtree. All of these PTO combined efforts promote communication between families and staff, making for a cohesive and strong community. We encourage you to use the website at www.marktwainpto.org, which is an invaluable resource to keep you up to date on upcoming PTO and school events. If you do not have access to a computer, we invite you to use the computers in the Mark Twain Library. We also encourage you to attend PTO meetings that are held on the first Wednesday of each month in the school library. Please mark your calendar for the first meeting on September 11th, free babysitting is provided at every meeting for children 3years and older.
On behalf of the PTO, I would like to extend a warm welcome and best wishes for a successful school year. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. I look forward to working with each of you! Together, we can enrich our children's education by supporting the Mark Twain IB mission to promote and develop responsible, active and reflective citizens of the world.

| TWAIN TRIATHLON | |

Mark Twain Families,
We are very excited to announce that Mark Twain will be hosting its very own kids' triathlon this coming November for all students! This will be a great opportunity for our children to challenge themselves with physical activity, involve our community, and a fun way to help raise funds for our school!
We will be sending out more specific details as we move into the school year. Encourage and challenge your Twain student to swim an extra lap, ride his/her bike another block, and run for fun!
Triathlon requirements for children ages 6-10 include:
Swim - 100 yards (4 lengths)
Bike - 3 miles
Run - 1/2 mile
We will have a special category for students K-2 who would like to participate, but not necessarily complete these requirements. All other students will be competing in either the K-2nd or 3rd-5th groups.
We hope you are as excited about this new event as we are, and look forward to making this a new tradition at Mark Twain. Stay tuned for more information to come!
If you would like to be on our volunteer list or have any questions please email:
