Back to School Shopping

Dear Mark Twain Parents and Friends,

Back to School shopping season is upon us! Mark Twain has partnered with BookBenefits.org to take advantage of cash benefits available to non-profits. Our school will receive a donation of 5% of your total purchases made on sites such as Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Toms, Groupon, iTunes and over 37 online retailers!!!

Follow these easy steps to ensure that Mark Twain gets credited for your purchases on these sites:

1.       Go to http://bookbenefit.org/marktwain/ to access the site. (Be sure to bookmark your favorite sites with the Mark Twain link.)  Since Amazon is such a widely used retailer, please see the specific link for their site http://www.amazon.com/?tag=bkben0013-20

2.       Click on the link for the online retailer of your choice.

3.       Complete purchases as you normally would.

4.       BookBenefits.org will send Mark Twain PTO a check quarterly with our contributions.

Spread the word to your friends and family and encourage them to use the BookBenefits.org links for their online shopping. Supporting Mark Twain has never been so easy!!!

Sales Tax Holiday
Aug. 9 - 11, 2013

Senate Bill 485 sets Aug. 9-11 as the dates of this year's annual Sales Tax Holiday. As in previous years, the law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales and use taxes, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend.

All sales of qualifying items made during the holiday period qualify for the exemption, including items sold online, or by telephone or mail. Lay-away plans can be used again this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday.  Check this link for more information:

HISD Millionaire Club - Summer Reading

Once again HISD library Services is promoting their summer reading incentive program, the Millionaire Club http://dept.houstonisd.org/millionaireclub/  to encourage reading.  When students return to school in August they will give their Millionaire Club Reading Logs to their teacher or bring them to the library.

This year as an incentive to increase participation, Mark Twain will hold a drawing for a pair of iPod shuffles, one for a boy and one or a girl.  All they need to do is submit a Millionaire Club Reading Log that is signed by their parent, caregiver or teacher.  These reading logs should arrive at school shortly and will be distributed in the Tuesday Folders.  Additional forms can be downloaded at the above link.

All books read can be recorded on the Millionaire Club Reading Log, from whichever list.
