Dear Mark Twain Families,

The summer months have been busy at Mark Twain.  In addition to the staff changes I mentioned in my earlier communication, Melanie Martin one of our fourth grade teachers will be moving back to Louisiana.  It was an unexpected transfer for her husband and we wish them well.  We interviewed last week for the position and are happy to announce that Jennifer Chapin will be joining us.  Jennifer is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts.  Ms. Chapin has a Master of Education and four years of teaching experience.

As most of you know, Dr. Rask, our strings teacher has been battling cancer.  She continues to receive treatment at MD Anderson and will focus her energies this fall on her health.  Information on the strings program for the fall will be provided at a later date.  Dr. Rask would welcome cards or notes from the Mark Twain community.  She is not up to receiving visitors but you may send correspondence to the address below.  I know that she would love hearing from you!

The class assignments will be mailed out prior to the Back to School Rumble on August 22nd.  If you have not received your assignment by August 20th, please contact Denise Rodriguez at 713-295-5230.

If you have walked by the school you will notice that the temporary buildings have been delivered.  They have not actually been placed nor are they move in ready.  The buildings will be painted a color that will blend in to the existing structure and landscaping will be added to enhance the area.  We have a lot of work to do, but I am confident that we will have everything ready and in tiptop shape before the Back to School Rumble on August 22nd.

The Stanford and Aprenda scores are available for pickup in the office between the hours of 8:00 - 4:30 Monday through Thursday.  The school will be back to a five day schedule starting the first week of August.

Teachers report to duty on August 12th for a full week of training on Rigor and Relevance.  The week of August 19th teachers will receive additional training on Stem Scopes (Science) and will participate in general staff meetings.  The majority of the time will be spent on preparing the rooms and building for the first day of school.

I am eager to welcome the children to a new school year.  Enjoy these final days of summer.
