He replied, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you." Matthew 17:19-21
Do you know what it is like to step out in faith? To just close your eyes and step into the unsure and the unknown?
Some of us did it when we graduated from high school and went to college. I did, with $10 cash, a pillow and a borrowed suit case. Having been the only one in my family to actually finish high school, I was never sure how college would end up. I remember applying to graduate school/seminary wondering, if I were accepted, could I accomplish completing that challenge. I was so unsure of myself but there was at least one adventurous bone in my body to just go ahead... step out... in faith. Have you ever just stepped out in faith, closing your eyes and stepping off into the unknown. Most of us do that from time to time and don't even think about it. Jesus said if we had faith the size of a mustard seed, we could move mountains.
I don't see the need to move a mountain, but I do see a need for me to have faith enough to move myself... to step out... to risk failure... to risk losing face with others or disappointing them. The only one whom I cannot disappoint when stepping out in faith is the one in whom I have faith... my Lord Jesus. He said something about hiding the gifts God gives us instead of offering them, risking them to prosper His work. (Parable of the talents)
Yet we live in a culture that wants assurances and guarantees; no stepping out in faith...no risk and little or no trust in God. We are not the church when we bury our talents and resources in the ground for fear of failure. The church steps out in faith, as we are with preparing our facility to minister to future generations yet born. Trinity's church leaders have decided to step out in faith believing that our priorities are in God's will and the work we do will bear fruit for the Kingdom of God. We are not going to bury the resources and gifts that God has provided.
I pray for everyone to be on board with this renovation project. Lift up these days in prayer and continue to support your Trinity Church with prayers, participation, gifts, service and witness. May we all have enough faith to be moved to step out and see what God can do in the days ahead. I am praying that God will bless each and every one of you during this Holy Week and Easter. Your faith may not move mountains, but could very well move your church into bold efforts to prepare for the future.
However, let us all remember, what the Apostle Paul said: "Nothing can compare with the marvelous future God has prepared for each of us." Romans 8:18 (JB Phillips) I don't need to move a mountain. I need to move my soul toward God, which may even be an even bigger project!
Your Servant in Christ Jesus,
John
