We need reminders and the fire apparatus you see in this picture is from FDNY.  One of the Special Operations Rescue Trucks that responded on that fateful Tuesday, September 11, 2001.  I understand, that there were eight specially trained firefighters on the apparatus that morning, because at the change of shift four from the oncoming shift and four from the outgoing shift decided to go together.  Seven of the eight did not return to the firehouse that day and are among those who gave their last full measure of devotion in the service of Fire Rescue.

Just as so many of us were reminded as we grew up of the Pearl Harbor Attack, we should remind our children and grandchildren of the Twin Towers Attack.  Not to make them sad, or to make them fearful, but to instill in them the meaning of sacrifice, love and the reality of how much it costs.  As our Lord said: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." (John 15:13) Every time an apparatus leaves a fire station, there is the chance that someone will sacrifice much to save another's life.  When I hear the sirens of Rescue or Law Enforcement, I lift a prayer for their safety and the welfare of whomever they are responding to.  I sat in Rescue 5 and thought of those who sat there as well and are now in the arms of the angels.  It was for me a hallowed moment.  So when you are out in traffic, make way when you hear the sirens and hope and pray that the call is routine and non-threatening as more than likely, that will not be the case. I am grateful to have the opportunity to play a small part in supporting and loving those who offer themselves in the interest and welfare of others.  When you are out there, thank a firefighter...thank a law enforcement officer and thank God for folks who are willing to dedicate their work for the good of others.

Your Servant, John
