Dana Farber mammo van JMSCHC and Dana-Farber partner to provide Mammograms
Several times a year the health center hosts the Dana Farber Mammography Van to provide mammograms to women on-site. This quarter the health center held 6 Van Days providing mammograms and health information to 264 women.

We also added Lifestyle Interventions to the Van Days and gave women easy tips to manage their nutrition. One of the classes focused on "Healthy Hydration" and gave women tips for choosing healthy drinks during the hot summer.  The second class was on "Healthy Fats" where our Nutritionists displayed  the amount of bad fats in common foods and discussed ways to switch to healthy fats.

This month, to mark the National Breast Cancer Month, we distributed bottles of water decorated with pink ribbons to raise awareness and also encourage women to drink more water.

ARRA logo JMSCHC receives federal stimulus funding to expand services and create jobs
The health center received funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to expand our vision services, improve our facilities, build a pharmacy and implement an Electronic Dental Record with digital X-ray.

The first grant of $288,216, awarded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA),  is supporting our efforts to expand vision services in the community.  The funding is allowing us to hire more staff to provide eye exams and to fit patients with frames. In addition to hiring new staff, the grant helped us retain staff when we were faced with funding reductions from the State.  It is also allowing us to outreach to community residents about our newly expanded vision services.

The second grant of $672,065, also awarded by HRSA, is supporting the renovation of 2 of our sites to construct additional medical exam rooms and to make room for an on-site pharmacy.  This grant is also allowing us to purchase and implement an Electronic Dental Record  (EDR) and a digital X-ray system.  This EDR will improve the efficiency of our dental department, link patients' dental records to their medical records, and promote an even higher level of quality care.

Celebrating 2009 National Health Center Week
Gallery Night: An Evening of Art and Apprec Gallery Night iation
The health center celebrated National Health Center Week August 9-15, 2009.  The week was dedicated to recognizing the service and contributions of Community Health Centers nationwide in providing access to affordable, high quality, cost-effective health care to medically vulnerable and underserved people.

In celebration, we hosted an event entitled Gallery Night: An Evening of Art and Appreciation.  We transformed our space into an art gallery for an evening to showcase children's artwork depicting what the health center means to our neighborhood children.  A panel of judges selected 6 winners out of over 50 entries. Each winner received a framed copy of their drawing and a backpack filled with back to school and art supplies.  We also recognized and honored our Board of Directors, who volunteer their time and many talents to the Health Center throughout the year.
