JMSCHC Wellness Tip

Do you spend more than an 1 hr a  day in front of the TV? Take advantage of the commercial breaks to move around! Stretch,  do lunges or squats, or consider investing in a pedal exerciser.

JMSCHC at the Union Square Farmer's Market

Nothing spells summer like a farmers market!

JMSCHC has been proud to partner with Allston Village Main Streets and Allston Brighton CDCto participate in the new Union Square Farmers Market.  Join friends and neighbors on Saturday, September 17th -our last day of the season-  for free health screenings, bike tune-ups, fresh produce, local honey, cold-brewed coffee, baked treats and other goodies.

The Union Square Farmers Market accepts SNAP and EBT!

JMSCHC at the Boston Public Library

On June 22, representatives of our Community Health and Health Benefits departments held a Health Benefits Fair at the Boston Public Library Brighton Branch. Many neighbors of Allston/Brighton braved the rain to discuss health insurance options and have their cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose checked. This is an effort to outreach to community members that are still uninsured and to have an active presence the Allston/Brighton neighborhood. We are planning to hold these Health Fairs around Allston/Brighton quarterly.

National Health Center Week 2011

Rep. Honan, Sleeper, & Ciommo
Representative Kevin Honan, JMSCHC Board member Ray Sleeper and Boston City Councilor Mark Ciommo were among our guests.

JMSCHC marked the celebration of National Health Center Week 2011 (NHCW) with a Mini-Health Fair and Open House on Wednesday, August 10th.  The event was part of a weeklong campaign to raise awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America's Health Centers.

Our health center was honored by the City of Boston as the site for the reading of the Mayoral Proclamation of National Health Center Week.   We are grateful to Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Boston Public Health Commission for choosing to make this important announcement about the role health centers play in the delivery of cost-effective, compassionate and appropriate health care at JMSCHC

We thank BMC HealthNet Plan, Neighborhood Health Plan, NACHC, Covidien, and Whole Foods Brighton for their generous sponsorship of this celebration. Other partners and exhibitors included Commonwheels Co-op/Allston-Brighton Bikes, WIC, Network Health, MassVote, Family Nurturing Center, Allston-Brighton Children Thrive and Care Giver Home.

Our patients and neighbors are looking forward to the next health fair!

NACHC/Covidien Challenge

JMSCHC patients will soon have access to a pharmacy in Waltham, thanks to the NACHC/Covidien Challenge Match Grant.  Our friends at Mount Auburn Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Business School contributed generously the matching funds needed to make this opportunity possible.

This award and the matching donations from our partners will provide JMSCHC with much needed financial resources to help expand its facilities and meet the demand for high quality, cost effective, and culturally competent health care services to the residents of Allston, Brighton, Waltham and surrounding communities. Construction will begin soon and the pharmacy is slated to open in 2012!

Let's Move!  Fall Walks in Waltham
Fall Walks Waltham
the group stops under the Silk Tree

In an effort to promote health and wellness through physical fitness, JMSCHC, Healthy Waltham, the Waltham Land Trust, and RTN Federal Credit Union came together to create a walking route pamphlet that can help Waltham citizens improve their health status and well-being.  Fall Walks will introduce people to three of the routes in the brochure over the three months of autumn. The walking group will kick off the season with guided tours of Waltham Common on September 10 at 10:30am and 12pm.   The group will meet again on Tuesday, October 11 at 5pm and on Saturday, November 5 at 10am to walk along the Charles River.  Remember to bring comfy shoes and meet us at our JMSCHC site at 564 Main Street in Waltham!
