| JMSCHC Nutrition Tip |
Are you feeling blue?
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects many people during the long and dark days of winter. You may feel like hibernating, but beat the winter blues by selecting foods high in tryptophan, B vitamins, Vitamin C and D, and Magnesium instead.
Stay away from refined sugar and comfort foods and choose lean meat, low fat dairy, tofu, avocados and bananas, and add seeds and nuts for snacks. Also, avoid all processed foods and meats.
Eat youself happy this winter!

Brighter Holidays |
In the spirit of the holidays, JMSCHC's Community Health Department rallied to collect non-perishable food and toiletries for needy patients. Starting on November 23rd. until 15th. JMSCHC received donations from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and JMSCHC employees. Their generosity allowed us to distribute 150 bags of much needed food and toiletries to 140 patient families in our community, which we distributed to specific families in need, making the holidays a little brighter. With the local food pantries suffering from low supplies of food, these donations made a big difference for our patients. |

Fit Kids! |
Exercise and good nutrition are key to health and wellness. The Fitness in the City Program, sponsored by Children's Hospital Boston, has made possible for JMSCHC to provide nutrition counseling, food vouchers, and gym memberships to 105 children since October 2010.
This year, a new partnership with the City of Boston Boston Bikes Program made 15 bicycles available for Fitness in the City paticipants through the Roll it Forward Initiative
We work together to encourage kids to eat right and get active! |

| Our Wish for the Holidays | | with your help, we can provide high impact care where it is needed most!
Joseph M. Smith Community Health Center is a non-profit, mission-driven primary care practice providing outstanding health care services to diverse underserved communities in Allston, Brighton, Waltham and surrounding areas. We help 12,000 people each year receive the medical, dental, counseling and vision care they need, but hundreds more people in the community ask for care than we can serve. In this holiday season, I ask for your help so that we can continue to deliver the critical health services that improve the quality of life for families and individuals in our neighborhood.
As many people continue to struggle in this difficult economy, the community needs our services more than ever. And we need your contribution more than ever. Here's how your gift can improve the health of our patients:
- $25 provides a vision screening during a well child check up
- $50 provides a dental cleaning to a low income child
- $100 provides mental health counseling services to a family in need
- $500 provides diabetes education and counseling visits for 3 patients
On behalf of our Board, staff, and patients, I ask that you please send a gift of whatever you can afford. You can donate online here.
I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season, and a joyous New Year.
Sincerely,

| Ahead of the Curve: Innovations in Primary Care | | JMSCHC Awarded Mayoral Prize for Innovations in Primary Care

The Prevention and Wellness (P&W) and Information Technology (IT) teams were recognized with the Mayoral Prize for Innovations in Primary Care in a Health Care Setting for their creative use of customized Electronic Medical Records (EMR) to address the challenges of providing continuous and coordinated care. The P&W template, which was built in-house, has been hailed as a crafty tool that promotes a true patient centered medical home for our patients and is worthy of replication. Of course, the tool is powered by the P&W team of navigators and case managers who ensure that that our patients get the care they need in a compassionate, culturally and linguistically appropriate, caring environment.
We thank Mayor Thomas M. Menino, the Boston Public Health Commission and Partners Healthcare for recognizing the enterprising creativity of the Prevention & Wellness and Information Technology Departments for their team-driven approache to patient centered medical care.

| Healthy Women; Strong Communities | |
Generous support from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure allows JMSCHC to host Women's Health Fair
Joseph M. Smith Community Health Center (JMSCHC) observed National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with an informative Women's Health Fair to raise awareness about the importance of early screening and detection. This educational fair was made possible by the generous support of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Massachusetts Affiliate. Our team offered workshops in breast health and preventive care, nutrition, family planning, cervical cancer, and other helpful topics. Participants had the opportunity to hear from cancer survivors, enjoy some giveaways, participate of health screenings on-site, and put on their dancing shoes to take part in a Zumba class led by our partners at the Oak Square YMCA.
