[June 16, 2016]Health Volunteers Overseas is pleased to announce the launch of a new orthopaedics project at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila, Philippines. HVO volunteers will increase orthopaedic knowledge and skills of the staff, residents and medical students at PGH.
PGH is a public hospital administered and operated by the University of the Philippines Manila - the University's Health Sciences Center. The PGH Department of Orthopaedics offers a four-year residency training program with rotations in orthopaedic trauma, adult and reconstructive orthopaedics, pediatric orthopaedics, spine surgery, and hand and microvascular surgery. In addition, PGH offers special rotations in musculoskeletal tumors, sports medicine and Ilizarov surgery, and prosthetics and tissue banking.
HVO volunteers will augment the training of approximately 20 orthopaedic residents, 30 orthopaedic attendings, and a number of third and fourth year medical students through formal lectures and informal teaching in operating rooms and clinics. Volunteers will also participate in regularly scheduled rounds and may conduct conferences to introduce new treatments and reinforce current concepts.
Volunteers to PGH in Manila, Philippines must be licensed, board-certified orthopaedic surgeons who are either currently practicing or retired. Assignments are two to four weeks in length.

Health Volunteers Overseas is a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve global health through education of the local health workforce in resource-scarce countries. HVO volunteers build local capacity by empowering health care professionals in resource-scarce countries with knowledge and skills to address the health care needs of their communities. HVO volunteers are trained health care professionals - physicians, nurses, dentists, physical therapists and others - willing to donate their time and expertise to work side-by-side with their colleagues overseas. Since 1986, HVO staff and volunteers have collaborated with a variety of health institutions to design, develop and implement each HVO project, working toward better patient care around the globe in trauma care, child and maternal health, essential surgery, cancer care, rehabilitation, and more.
