Dear Friends,

"Global health care" at one time conveyed images of fighting malaria, dengue fever, and Giardia. Today, as I look at HVO's program areas, there is a wide variety of issues that are being addressed - safe surgery practices, rehabilitation, mental health care, cancer treatment, periodontics, diabetes care. Unfortunately, as the world becomes more industrialized, more of the long-term chronic health care issues that we face in the US are found abroad. At the same time, malaria, dengue fever, and Giardia continue to take a toll in many resource-scarce countries, as do maternal and infant mortality. (WHO reports that less than 50% of births in the Africa Region are attended by skilled personnel). That means that many countries are battling problems across the health care spectrum - from water-borne diseases to oncology treatments.

HVO projects are addressing health care issues across the globe, bringing new techniques and sharing knowledge, with each project designed according to the needs and requests of the local project sites.  Whatever health care skills you have to share, I am sure HVO can find a project match for you. Please consider a volunteer opportunity this year!

Once again, our featured book this month is the work of HVO volunteers. It addresses the vastly different care levels observed in cancer treatment across the globe.

Best wishes for a lovely and healthy spring!

Sincerely,

Nancy

Honor Your Mother by Helping Another
This Mother's Day - Sunday, May 10th - make a gift to HVO in honor of your mom and improve access to life-saving health care for women and children around the world.

A mom and child with health worker

Unicef.org reports: "About 800 women are dying each day in the process of giving life. And for every woman who dies, approximately 20 others suffer serious injuries, infections or disabilities. Almost all maternal deaths (99 per cent) occur in developing countries."

Many causes of maternal death are preventable when women have access to quality health care.

HVO volunteers teach and train local health care providers in resource-scarce countries. By providing essential support and education to local health providers and students of health care, they strengthen health systems. These health systems are better able to meet the need for life saving care for patients, including mothers and their children.

You can support these efforts and honor the women in your life with a gift to Health Volunteers Overseas. Just visit our online donor form and tell us that you are making your gift in honor or in memory of a special person in your life.

Thank you!
