Announcing the 2015 HVO-SEA Traveling Fellows

[Washington, DC - April 24, 2015]  Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO), in collaboration with the Society for Education in Anesthesia (SEA), is pleased to announce that eight anesthesia residents will receive a 2015 SEA-HVO Traveling Fellowship.

The recipients are: Edward C. Clune, MD (University of Massachusetts Medical School), Christina A. Jelly, MD, MSc (Massachusetts General Hospital), Theresa Northern, DO, MPH (Ochsner Clinic Foundation), Pooja G. Pandya, MD (The Johns Hopkins Hospital), Lauren Pieczynski, MD (Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania), Rachel Steckelberg, MD, MPH (University of California - Los Angeles), Lauren Steffel, MD (Stanford University Hospital and Clinics), and Irving Ye, MD, MBA (University of Washington). Each Fellow will serve a one-month assignment at an HVO anesthesia site.

The SEA-HVO Fellowship allows senior anesthesia residents the opportunity to improve anesthesia care in resource-scarce countries by teaching and mentoring their counterparts. The SEA-HVO Fellows are able to witness a wide range of surgical pathologies and anesthetic techniques not commonly seen in the United States. They learn to communicate more effectively with people from different cultures and observe the realities and constraints of delivering health care in a resource-scarce environment. Most importantly, SEA-HVO Fellows serve as teachers of anesthesia and role models for anesthesia students at HVO project sites and contribute to the safety of future patients receiving anesthesia.

The SEA-HVO Traveling Fellowship would not be possible without the generous support of Dr. Jo Davies, Dr. Chris and Rebecca Dobson, Dr. Lena E. Dohlman, Dr. Lisa Feintech, Dr. Ronald L. Katz, Dr. Gary E. Loyd, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), and SEA members.

The Society for Education in Anesthesia is a nonprofit educational organization for anesthesiology educators who desire to improve their skills in anesthesia education. For more information on the various activities of SEA, visit their website.

Health Volunteers Overseas is a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve global health through education of the local health workforce in resource-scarce countries. HVO volunteers build local capacity by providing health care professionals in resource-scarce countries with knowledge and skills to address the health care needs of their communities. HVO volunteers are trained health care professionals - physicians, nurses, dentists, physical therapists and others - willing to donate their time and expertise to work side-by-side with their colleagues overseas. Since 1986, HVO staff and volunteers have collaborated with a variety of health institutions to design, develop and implement each HVO project, working toward better patient care around the globe in trauma care, child and maternal health, essential surgery, cancer care, rehabilitation, and more.
