March 2015

Dear Friends,

I recently returned from the Combined Sections Meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association. The enthusiasm and collaborative atmosphere was exciting and energizing. The sharing of information and the networking that occurs at association meetings is important on so many levels.

When HVO volunteers share their knowledge and skills, they are bringing education and professional collaboration to their colleagues abroad, many of whom may work in isolation and crave opportunities for professional development. Of course, collaboration is a two-way street, and volunteers frequently share how their knowledge was increased by working in a different environment and culture.

There are a number of association meetings in the coming months. In March alone, conferences will be held for American College of Cardiology, American Academy of Dermatology, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, and Society of Gynecologic Oncology. In April, there will be conference for American Academy of Neurology, Oncology Nursing Society, and American College of Physicians.

Check the Net Connection each month to find out where HVO is represented. We hope you will plan to attend your association's conference this year, and if HVO has a booth, please stop by to discuss volunteer opportunities that are right for you!

.

Sincerely,

Nancy

Share Your HVO Experience
HVO volunteers who share their experiences with family, friends and colleagues help expand the HVO network.

Many volunteers who return from overseas assignments choose to share their experience with their colleagues and friends. Their efforts not only raise awareness of the global health workforce crisis, but motivate others to support HVO and even to volunteer themselves. In fact, approximately 1/3 of HVO's prospective volunteers find out about HVO from a colleague.

Not only is sharing an important way to support the HVO mission, it also serves as a powerful tool to cope with re-entry after a long assignment overseas. As we highlight in A Guide to Volunteering Overseas, "...a successful re-entry strategy is to give talks and presentations to interested civic, church and professional groups about your overseas experiences. This way, you can channel your enthusiasm for overseas work to those who share your interests."

To help facilitate these talks and presentations, HVO offers a basic PowerPoint presentation and other materials with our "Meeting-in-a-Box". Just fill out the form on our website to receive materials.

HVO also welcomes volunteers to send their volunteer stories to share on
the HVO Blog - our online resource for sharing impact stories and news. Story ideas can be submitted to our communications coordinator.
