The recipients are: Benjamin Aakre, MD (Mayo Clinic), Vanya Choumanova, MD (Brigham and Women's Hospital), Sarah Clark, MD (Stanford Hospital & Clinics), Rohesh Fernando, MD (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center), Michael Hatch, MD (University of Pennsylvania Health System), Rohan Jain, MD (University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System), William Navarre, MD, MPH (Northwestern Memorial Hospital), Nenna Nwazota, MD (Baylor College of Medicine), and Meghan Prin, MD (New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University). Each Fellow will serve a one-month assignment at an HVO anesthesia training site in Malawi or Vietnam.
The SEA-HVO Fellowship allows senior anesthesia residents the opportunity to improve anesthesia care in developing countries by teaching and mentoring their counterparts. The SEA-HVO Fellows are able to witness a wide range of surgical pathologies and anesthetic techniques not commonly seen in the United States. They learn to communicate more effectively with people from different cultures and observe the realities and constraints of delivering health care in a resource-scarce environment. Most importantly, SEA-HVO Fellows serve as teachers of anesthesia and role models for the anesthesia students at the HVO project site where they serve and contribute to the future safety of patients receiving anesthesia in developing nations.
The SEA-HVO Traveling Fellowship would not be possible without the generous support and donations from Dr. Jo Davies, Dr. Chris and Rebecca Dobson, Dr. Lena E. Dohlman, Dr. Lisa Feintech, Dr. Ronald L. Katz, Dr. Gary E. Loyd, the Connecticut State Society, the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), and SEA members.
The Society for Education in Anesthesia is a nonprofit educational organization for anesthesiology educators who desire to improve their skills in anesthesia education. For more information on the various activities of SEA, visit their website.
Health Volunteers Overseas is a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve global health through education. HVO volunteers build local capacity by providing health care professionals in developing countries with the knowledge, skills and ability they need to address the health care needs of their communities. HVO volunteers are trained health care professionals - physicians, nurses, dentists, physical therapists and others - willing to donate their time and expertise to work side-by-side with their colleagues overseas. Since 1986, HVO staff and volunteers have collaborated with a variety of health institutions to design, develop and implement each HVO project, working toward better patient care around the globe in trauma care, child and maternal health, safe surgery, cancer care, rehabilitation, and more.
