September 2013
Greetings!

We hope you enjoy this new version of the HVO Net Connection. Our goal is to provide you with useful information about HVO volunteer work, global health, and ways you can get involved. We still have information about volunteer opportunities and upcoming events, and now we'll feature an HVO success story - a chance for us to share the work of our volunteers, partners overseas and/or supporters who are making an impact in global health. We will also feature a volunteer photo every month.

I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight a special new campaign that HVO is launching today. Thanks to a partnership with mileage.org, HVO can now accept frequent flyer mile donations to help support our programs. Click Donate Miles to learn more.

If you would like to contribute photos, success stories or global health information for an upcoming Net Connection, please contact us. We would love to hear from you! Thank you, and have a wonderful month!

Sincerely,

Nancy

SuccessStoryExpanding Capacity
HVO has launched 12 new projects this year

Doctors on Rounds in Costa Rica (Oncology)
By teaching and training local health care providers, HVO volunteers are working to expand the in-country capacity of developing nations to meet the current and future health care needs of patients. In 2013, our mission to improve global health through education has led to the launch of 12 new capacity-building projects.

With a dozen new projects, HVO has stretched its global reach to new countries like Bolivia, Belize, Kenya and Myanmar, as well as expanded linkages in countries with an HVO presence already. Through new sponsors, such as the American College of Cardiology and the American Association for Hand Surgery, and HVO's long-established partnerships, our portfolios in trauma care and rehabilitation, oral health, safe surgery, hematology, and nurse education have expanded. In oncology, partnerships with the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Society of Gynecologic Oncology have enabled HVO to double its cancer care portfolio, now working in six countries throughout South and Central America, Africa and Asia.

While each new program is tailored to the needs of our in-country partners, they all share HVO's focus on education to improve the quality and availability of care for those who need it most.

They also all share a need for volunteers. We encourage you to visit the KnowNET to read reports from recent volunteers to the sites and learn more about the new projects, or contact the HVO office  to find out about our volunteer needs.

...and be sure to keep an eye out for even more project announcements to come!

Do you have an HVO success story to share?
Tell us about it!
