HVO Launches Hematology Program in

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

[Washington, DC - May 30, 2013]  Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) is delighted to announce the establishment of a hematology program in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) and Muhimbili University of Health and Dar es Salaam, TanzaniaAllied Sciences (MUHAS). This program has been developed in partnership with the American Society of Hematology (ASH), an HVO sponsor.

MNH is the national referral hospital for Tanzania as well as the referral center for the country's Eastern Zone. The 1,500 bed facility is a tertiary care center that services 1,000 to 1,200 outpatients per week and 1,000 to 1,200 inpatients per day.  MUHAS is the oldest and chief medical school in Tanzania. It comprises 5 schools: medicine, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, and public health.

MNH, in collaboration with MUHAS, provides undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in hematology and blood transfusion for all cadres of health care providers. In addition, through the Institute of Allied Health Sciences it provides teaching for diploma and advanced diploma in medical laboratory sciences. There is now an active program of training and continuing professional development. This includes formal postgraduate training courses, short courses & workshops, exchange programs and on the job training for both clinical and laboratory staff.

HVO will recruit pediatric and adult hematology/oncology clinicians or laboratory-based scientists to provide essential training and staff development for physicians, nurses, residents, students, and laboratory technicians at MNH and MUHAS in the field of hematology. Volunteers must be board certified in hematology and/or blood banking. Individuals with a PhD must be certified in hematopathology or pathology with demonstrated experience in hematopathology. Assignments are one to four weeks in length.

The American Society of Hematology is the world's largest professional society concerned with the causes and treatments of blood disorders. The mission of the global strategy of ASH is to further the understanding of hematology globally through international collaboration, foster the worldwide exchange of knowledge and resources, and enhance clinical care through education and training.
