[ Washington, DC - April 4, 2013] Health Volunteers Overseas is delighted to announce the launch of its new nursing education program in La Paz, Bolivia at Hospital Arco Iris (HAI) in partnership with HOPE worldwide.
The program seeks to improve the quality of nursing services provided to patients at HAI by updating and broadening local nurses' skills and knowledge in all areas. Priorities for clinical training include NICU training, emergency nursing, care of the diabetic patient, care of the patient with HTN and geriatric nursing. Other important areas are ICU, pediatrics, and med-surge nursing.
Volunteers' primarily focus will be upgrading the skills and practice of the licensed nurses at HAI. Auxiliary nurses (the equivalent of the nursing assistant in the US) may also participate in the training provided. Training will be incorporated at the bedside with formal presentations given in one hour blocks throughout the day. Assignments are two to four weeks.
Volunteers may be active or retired with a current license to practice, hold a BSN degree or higher and have a minimum of ten years experience. All areas of expertise are needed. Academic experience is helpful but not required. Volunteers must be able to speak Spanish at an intermediate level in order to communicate with the staff and patients in the clinic. A translator will be provided for formal lectures.
HAI is a large component of Foundation Arco Iris (FAI), a non-governmental organization that strives to serve the poor and homeless population of children, teenagers, and young adults living on the streets in La Paz. FAI provides many services to these youth including a place to sleep, food, health care, clothing, education, technical training, and psychological support for their personal improvement. Children make up the majority of the patients seen at HAI with a large number suffering from respiratory illness, trauma, and orthopaedic issues. However, patients of all ages are seen at HAI.
