Academic Success Partner of the Month

This month, it brings us great pleasure to introduce our readers to St Gregory Nazianzen School and its principal, Linda Guzman.
After obtaining her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in education, Linda taught at St Gregory's for eight years before becoming principal four years ago. With a high percentage of Asian and Hispanic students, St Gregory's (transitional kinder through 8th grade) provides a broad range of learning experiences designed to help those students meet the challenges of a bi-cultural childhood and adolescence.
St Gregory's adopts a holistic approach to education in accordance with the goals of Catholic schools in the archdiocese of Los Angeles. The school aims at the development of students who will not only achieve personal success but also make meaningful contributions to society as a whole. One of the cornerstones of this approach is shared responsibility centered around a positive home environment; parents are engaged in conferencing with both teachers and principal on a regular basis.
For more information, contact Linda by email, visit the website or call 323 936 2542.

What is
Singularity
and Why Is It So Important For Our Students?

Featured in the title of the recent best-seller by acclaimed futurist and thinker Ray Kurzweil, the term Singularity  is now being used to describe a reality in which human beings become optimally aligned with technology in order to take personal and career achievement to new heights.
With computers, tablets and other mobile devices functioning as a core element in our kids' education, the future has indeed arrived. Students are now expected to achieve their own optimal version of Singularity.
But how best to merge and coordinate this incredible technology in order to achieve the greatest success?
In this month's issue, we'll take a two-pronged approach to the topic:
  • In Education News, we'll present remarkable reports from here and around the world of students and educators getting together to maximize technology in the quest for academic success.
  • In our Study Tip section, we'll present 5 of our favorite "Singularity Apps" that we believe have the power to transform not only a student's work habits, but also their academic results.

At Academic Success, we're excited about the changing landscape of education and are committed to catching those winds of change to continue serving the needs of our students.

A Fusion Of Design, Business and Education

As funding for technology in our schools increases, it will be critical to get the educational and interactive balance right in our classrooms. This fascinating round-table discussion on Huffpost Live brings together experts on the subject to explore what might happen when teachers and students are looking at their screens more than each other.

Underprivileged Kids On The Cutting Edge

In the small rural town of L'Hay-Les Roses, just outside of Paris, a classroom of underprivileged French third-graders are participating in an experiment that will likely spread throughout the rest of the country: tackling their entire syllabus with the aid of their tablet and a teacher trained to work in harmony with the latest technology.

Getting the Most Out of Your Devices

A Singular Vision For Education

The US Department of Education has declared October to be "Connected Educator Month". With that in mind, this elementary school principal and author shares his dreams for a dynamic future: a day in which every student - and teacher - works with a tablet in a fully connected classroom.

Study Tips

Creating A More Singular Workflow

With the market flooded with educational apps, it can be somewhat overwhelming to choose those that will be of real use in the classroom, online and during study time.
This month we've selected 5 fantastic educational apps and portals that have the power to transform a student's educational experience and possibilities.

In Class (iPads and iPhones) is an incredible multimedia app with note-sharing, scheduling and organizational features that have the power to streamline a student's academic life.

Zotero (Apple and PC  devices)
is an app that has the capacity to solve one of the
biggest problems for students: organizing
copious amount of research including articles, links, excerpts from books and other online materials.

Evernote, (Apple & PC devices)
is an app specializing in note-taking,
ensuring that the user cannot and will not forget any important information taken down during class and on the fly.

iStudiez Pro is one of the best planning apps built to align Mac, iPad and iPhone users. An incredible piece of software for both students and parents.

Blackboard  Finally, it is worth highlighting the kind of online educational portal that will soon be used by educators everywhere. Blackboard, already in common use at universities and colleges, puts students and educators on the same page, allowing for increased workflow, greater accessibility to course materials and more dynamic interclass communication.

Coach Profile

Meet Justin Tandigan,
  Coach Profile of The Month

This month we're pleased to revisit one of the newer members of our coaching team, Justin Tandingan. Justin was born in Portland, Oregon. He's a proud University of Oregon Duck where he studied Public Policy and Ethnic Studies. Justin moved to Los Angeles in the last couple of years, during which time he has worked for the nonprofit Teach For America and is currently a master's student at USC in Public Policy. Justin is focusing his graduate work on advocating for teachers to be more involved in crafting education policy, believing that it's important for teachers (not to mention parents and communities) to understand which policies may affect them and their students. He is excited to continue being a part of the Academic Success team

 :
We consider it a privilege and an honor to support students and their families throughout the Los Angeles area.  Please call us at any time; we welcome your thoughts and input.  We are available at 310-823-4398.

Sincerely,
