Academic Success Partner of the Month
College bound students and their families typically feel a sense of excitement, anticipation and worry, as they focus on finding a college where the student will be happy and productive... and can get in. One of our favorite partners, Paula Barksdale & Associates, can help. Paula established her practice in 2001 to help high school students prepare for, select and apply to colleges. Families hire her for a variety of reasons: to gain exposure to a high number of schools; to have an expert on their team to provide hands-on guidance, and to reduce family stress with an objective, caring third party. Paula and her team work with students across the spectrum of academic, athletic and extracurricular achievement and students have found her support greatly reduces stress during a time of enormous change and uncertainty.Visit her website

Welcome to the 2nd Part of Our
3-Part Summer Series!
With much-needed leisure time during their break, students have a chance not only to reflect, but also to dream about the future.
With that in mind, we're devoting our July issue to the importance and Power of Dreams.
Underneath every student's desire to succeed, to improve, to strive to the best they can be lies a dream. Some kids have a particular career in mind while others may simply dream of accomplishing great things or creating a meaningful life full of work and endeavor.
In the current environment of intense competition for college admission and future employment, it's absolutely critical for students and their parents and educators to nourish and cultivate those dreams.
In this issue, we'll offer up inspiring examples of students living their dreams. We'll also show what's possible when students use their dreams as a motivator to work harder and soar higher than ever before.
At Academic Success, we believe that nurturing our students' dreams can be just as important as cultivating their minds.
Please call with any questions at (310) 823 4398 or
All the best,
Jamie
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by those you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails.... and explore. DREAM. Discover."

The Indestructibility Of Dreams
While many students here in the US face real problems in getting a quality education, this astonishing CNN Report focuses on nine incredible girls in Haiti, determined to continue their education in the face of unthinkable devastation.
Dreaming of an Education before Fame
For all the talk of "overnight" success stories, many of today's biggest stars aspired to gain a quality education before ever dreaming of fame and fortune. This illuminating article should serve as a reminder that making big academic dreams come true usually lead to amazing things later in life.
Out of Hardship,
Dreaming
Up A Novel
Raising a child with learning disabilities can be one of the most academically challenging tasks for any parent, yet that didn't stop fashion designer Dana Buchman from dreaming big for her child, Charlotte- and now she and her daughter have written a book about their journey. This lovely, inspiring interview should make all parents and students feel that the sky's the limit.
Mandela's Dream Coming True
As the world at this very moment keeps vigil of Nelson Mandela's precarious health, one of his most cherished dreams is coming to fruition. With the erection and imminent opening of the Mandela School of Science and Technology in his home town, another seemingly impossible dream is about to be realized.
Student Success Stories
Although there is something remarkable about students achieving academic success from start to finish, stories of struggle, redemption and ultimate triumph can often be greater inspirations to continue chasing our dreams. This collection of success stories from college admissions experts provides some shining examples.

For all of us who dream of achieving great things, there is always the gap that must be bridged between the dreams in our imagination and taking the steps to realize them in physical form.
One dynamic first step in this process can be the creation of a Vision Board.
This process can do wonders to also help motivate students in their academic endeavors, serving as a touchstone for their dreams when they face possible distraction or discouragement.
Students could place a photo of the college they wish to attend, or put up a number representing their goal for an important exam that lies ahead. The Vision Board can also be the place for dreams outside school that further serve to excite students to keep working hard.
Vision boards present an exciting opportunity for kids to begin musing on what they want their life to look like in the future and to begin setting short and longer-term goals in order to make those dreams a reality.

Meet Dave Berube,
Coach Profile of The Month
It's unlikely that many students could say that their tutor has a PhD, yet that is exactly the case with one of the most experienced members of our team, Dave Berube. Dr.Berube (as he now likes to be called..) began tutoring his students while also working as a professor of Physics at Loyola Marymount University, before going on to get his PhD in Space Physics at UCLA. Dave is one of the most qualified math and science tutors in Los Angeles. He still loves to help students see the beauty behind numbers as he guides them to success, whether it be working on seventh grade algebra or prepping a student for a physics exam. Dave has a passion for learning himself, as his LMU bio indicates; he's currently doing research on "the investigation of the interaction of the solar wind with the Earth's magnetosphere"! He's also coordinating a summer program for college interns at LMU. Dave looks forward to continue helping his students to blossom. During very rare moments of free time, he still likes to hike and devour copious amounts of peanut butter.
