"By all these lovely tokens, September days are here, with summer's best of weather, and autumn's best of cheer."
                                                                          ~Helen Hunt Jackson
September is a transition month in so many ways. During its short span, we pass from summer to autumn, students and teachers return to classrooms from vacation breaks, and all that is green around us goes from grow to slow. For the Wakefield Estate, we put the wraps on another year of exciting summer programs, with new discoveries by the archaeology dig enriches our understanding of the estate's agricultural history, and some new programs like our Summer Garden Music series and MCH Plant Geek Day that expand our ideas about creative ways that the estate can be used for community enjoyment and enrichment. In the coming weeks, we will welcome back scores of elementary students to witness nature's transition to fall and preparation for winter, and we will work to prepare the grounds and buildings for what may well be another tough winter. We hope that you will make time for a visit during open hours, or to enjoy our Garden Music event on the 17th. Come to enjoy this beautiful place at one of its peak times. The bounty of this beauty can sustain us and encourage us to make the most of these shortening days ahead.

Third Thursday Garden Music Series Continues!
Thursday, September 17, 6:00pm-dusk

This month's garden music night will feature Alex Stening, a french horn player pursing a master's degree in french horn performance at the New England Conservatory. Alex is passionate about learning, meeting people, eating dark chocolate and is grateful the horn has brought many opportunities for him to explore the world.
Join us for a late summer casual gathering and light refreshments serenaded by great music in the estate's Front Garden and enjoy the garden at one of its peaks of beauty.
Rain or shine; $10 suggested donation. Please call to RSVP: 617-333-0924.
Plant Geek Day at the Estate -a "certified" success

We are proud and excited to have hosted the Mass. Nursery and Landscape Associates (MNLA) Certified Horticulturalists for their annual "Plant Geek Day" on August 19. The Mass. Certified Horticulturalists (MCH) are professionals in the nursery and landscape industry who have invested the time to learn and qualify as experts in the field. A Massachusetts Certified Horticulturist has the specialized training to understand and troubleshoot both common and unique garden and landscape problems and to recommend effective solutions. As part of their day, the MCHs participated in a Plant ID challenge to identify 25 trees in Polly Wakefield's collection. No one got all 25 right, but the winner headed home with a case of Sam Adams. Thanks to Christie Dustman and Greg Dorr for volunteering their expertise to teach break out sessions on pruning and tree risk assessment.
Open Hours Continue
Open Hours are beginning to catch on! We frequently receive questions about visitation and began a "pilot program" of regular open hours in July. As awareness and interest in these opportunities for self-guided visits is increasing, we are extending them through mid-October with some modifications to adjust for the shortening days. Public open hours will continue every Thursday from 4:00-dusk, and third Saturdays: Sept.19th and October 17th, from 9:00-noon, rain or shineFor these open hours, it is not necessary to schedule a visit. While we are open for business Monday through Friday, we are generally open for visits by appointment only. We request visitors to call to schedule a visit (617) 333-0924 x22. If you plan to visit during open hours, feel free to call us to let us know to expect you, or if you need directions.
Want to get your hands dirty? Need some exercise?
Or need some Community Service Hours?
Our Volunteer Corps is growing, and beginning to have a real impact. If you would like to get more involved with the Wakefield Estate, you too can make a difference.
This fall, we are anxious to partner with corporations, churches, community groups, scout troops, families, and groups of friends who are interested in coming out for a few hours to help with fall clean-up. We have some "Drop-In Volunteer Days" scheduled on October 3rd, as well as the third Saturdays of September and October, and a Community Service Day on Veteran's Day, November 11. We've got lots of work to do, ranging from trail maintenance and preparation for the school trips, to fall clean-up and raking. If getting dirty isn't your thing, give us a call and we can probably find a task that will match your interests and our needs!
If you're interested in learning more about our volunteer needs and opportunities, please call Erica Max at 617-333-0924x22.
