"August creates as she slumbers, replete and satisfied."
-  Joseph Wood Krutch

The "dog days" of summer are upon us! The August heat imposes a slowing down - I can almost feel it in my bones as I will myself to confront the heavy mid-day sun. After a busy June and July, August is a quieter month here at the Wakefield Estate -- and the landscape almost seems to pause as it too takes it slow in the heat. Similar to the dead of winter when all of nature seems to slumber, there is a certain stasis to the landscape in August. The air on these hot afternoons stands still, accentuating the slowness of time. The flowering trees of early summer have long lost their blossoms; the colors that helped distinguish the dogwood from the redbud are gone, leaving a verdant panorama without distinction. But we know better - there is no stasis in nature. Within a month we'll be feeling the chill of autumn nights as the seasons march on. I for one am glad for the changing seasons, for change is what stirs our imaginations.

Summer Archaeology Institute Locates 18th-century barn

The goal for this year's Summer Archaeology Institute was to find the foundation of the 18th-century barn complex that stretched behind the back side of the John Davenport farmhouse. After four weeks of digging, ten students from ten different communities and Boston University doctoral students Sara Belkin and Jade Luiz pinpointed one corner of the barn's foundation and several walls.  Next year's dig will continue to explore the extent of the foundation -- stay tuned!

Are You A VIP?
One reason for the success of this year's Dogwood Days festivities was the hard work by our new and growing corps of volunteers. If you would like to get more involved with the Wakefield Estate, we need your help.
Right now, we especially need volunteers to help us expand our Open Hours and help with our upcoming events like Third Thursdays.
If you have some free time, and would like to get a little more involved; or are a high school student looking to log some Community Service hours, please call Erica Max at 617-333-0924x22.
