"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength
that will endure as long as life lasts."
- Rachel Carson

Like the petasites pushing their purple conical heads through the cool soil to feel the warm sun of May, all of nature emerges from the deep slumber of this long winter. Movement and energy return, every manner of insect springs into action, flora and fauna busily work from sun-up to sun-down to take full advantage of the life they have left. For some, like most insects, that can be a few days or weeks. In contrast, the life of the maples and oaks spans human generations. No matter how short or long, all of nature -- insect or tree -- lives the life it has to the fullest. It is from nature that we can truly see the Latin aphorism, Carpe Diem, at work; and it is from sages like Rachel Carson that inform our ability to learn its lessons.

HOT SPOT!

Look here each month to find out about what we need a hand with. Some months, we might announce a volunteer work day or ask for help at an event like Dogwood Days; other months, we might be looking for anyone willing to help us spread the word about one of our programs.

MAY:

This month, our program schedule kicks into HIGH GEAR! We need help with our Volunteer Day on the 9th, the Fairy Fest on the 16th, and with school field trips throughout May and June. If you are interested in helping with any of these events, or want to become a "Visitor Info Pal," please give us a call at 617-333-0924 x22.

Spring has arrived and the Wakefield Estate is very busy preparing for this year's Dogwood Days, June 14-21. There is a lot of work to be done and a Volunteer Day is scheduled Saturday, May 9th, 9:00 am-noon. For those of you who can help, trees need to be potted and gardens need to be prepped for transplanting a wonderful variety of plant material. With your help, it will be the best volunteer day ever! Come spend the morning at the Wakefield Estate and learn about planting while helping us prepare for Milton's "garden show." High school students needing to complete community service hours are especially welcome! For more information or to register to help, call 617-333-0924 x22.

2015 Stone Soup Series: Great Trees of the Estate
Thursday, May 28: 5:30 - 7:00 pm
Spotlight on the Wakefield Estate's Beloved Dogwoods!
Just in time for Dogwood Days, this month's Stone Soup and Speaker will offer a portrait of estate's signature tree: Cornus kousa, the Chinese Dogwood. Deb Merriam, the estate's Landscape Director, will share the intriguing story of this tree and Polly Wakefield's love affair with the species. Through seed collection and propagation, Polly was able to name and patent 7 different cultivars of this stunning and versatile tree. Stone Soup and Speakers events are held on the final Thursday of each month through May. These warm and casual programs begin at 5:30 pm with a bowl of tasty home-made soup, followed by a short presentation by the featured speaker. Space IS limited. Pre-registration is required. If you know some young people who might be interested in this program, you can help us by downloading our flyer via this link and posting it, or sharing it with your teen's school or library. We need YOU!
In 2015, one of our goals is to build up our nascent volunteer corps. We need volunteers to help us with our events, ranging from family activities and school visits to Dogwood Days in June. We will also be training a small crew of Visitor Info Pals, so we can expand our Open Hours. For those interested in just lending a hand occasionally, we will be scheduling monthly volunteer work days starting in May.
If you have some free time, and would like to get a little more involved; or are a high school student looking to log some Community Service hours, please call Erica Max at 617-333-0924x22.
