"We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give."

- Sir Winston Churchill

Last week we enjoyed the holiday of giving thanks; this week, we enter the season of giving. What may seem like a lucky coincidence of history, the sequence of these "seasons" reminds us of the connection between gratitude and generosity. In my experience, gratitude precedes generosity. Being thankful leads to a yearning to give. Gratitude animates our instinct to be generous, and, paradoxically, it is in giving that we truly receive. I never knew Polly Wakefield, but I have to assume that it was her profound gratitude of living her life in this beautiful corner of Eden that lead her to generously give it to the rest of us to enjoy. In this season of gratitude and giving, let us emulate that spirit of generosity.

On "Giving Tuesday," Help Us Make A Difference

After Black Friday and Cyber Monday, comes Giving Tuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. In the spirit of Giving Tuesday, we invite you to consider supporting the innovative educational and community programming we offer at the Wakefield Estate that benefits hundreds each year.Your support is a tangible way to make a difference in the lives of children and youth who participate in our eye-opening and life-changing programs. Please consider becoming a member and including us in your end-of-the-year giving. And remember: there are other valuable ways to give - for instance, we've seen that volunteers can make a broad array of meaningful contributions! For more information about how to make a substantial gift in support of our work, please call Executive Director Mark Smith at 617-333-0924 x 21.
TOMORROW NIGHT! Opening reception of a month-long exhibit featuring Polly Wakefield's watercolors - Wotiz Gallery, Milton Public Library - Tuesday, December 2nd - 6:00-8:00 pm

An opening reception will be held December 2nd for a month-long exhibit of watercolor paintings by the late Mary "Polly" M. B. Wakefield. The exhibit, the final event in a year-long celebration of Polly Wakefield's 100th birthday year, will be on display in the Wotiz Gallery of the Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Avenue in Milton. This collection reflects work done over dozens of years, right up until Polly's death in 2004, while studying with esteemed painter Nancy Sargent Howell. Polly's works reflect Howell's method of allowing students to borrow heavily from her work and others in order to learn how to mix colors, use brush strokes, and develop compositions. The exhibit will include some of Howell's work to help illustrate her method of "teacher-pupil" connection. The exhibit is the final event in a year-long celebration of Polly Wakefield's 100th birthday year. Mrs. Wakefield died in 2004, leaving her estate to be used for education and enjoyment under the direction of the Mary M. B. Wakefield Charitable Trust.

The reception will be held at the library and is free to the public. Sets of gift cards made of some of Polly's paintings will be available for purchase. For more information, call 617-333-0924 x22 or the library at 617-698-5757.
