"Wherever you turn, you can find someone who needs you. Even if it is a little thing, do something for which there is no pay but the privilege of doing it. Remember, you don't live in a world all of your own."
- Albert Schweitzer

Many people have inquired about volunteering here at the Wakefield Estate - and our answer always is: "We LOVE volunteers! Sometimes volunteers come as individuals and sometimes in groups. Just last week, over 40 employees from Dunkin Brands helped plant over 150 new plants in the formal gardens and spread mulch on the woodland trails to prepare for visits from elementary students; an entire crew (along with two bucket trucks and a chipper!) from Hunt Tree Service in Milton donated their efforts as part of Massachusetts Arborists' Arbor Day of Service, local Eagle scout Alex Vinke led a crew of 20 to repair and paint the chicken coop, and two seniors from local high schools began their internships working alongside our staff. Amazing! There are many tasks for volunteers to help with, and we welcome all who want to chip in!
If you are interested to learn more or have questions about volunteering, I invite you this Thursday afternoon, May 1, between 4:00-5:30pm to drop in and speak with us about your interests to become a volunteer.

Thursday, May 1, 4:00-5:30 pm
We know that many of you love what we do here and want to get more involved - with our programs, with the landscape, with school visits, and more. This spring, we are launching a volunteer recruitment effort to support some of our key programs. Initially, we will be focusing on five initiatives which will suit a broad array of volunteers ranging from a teen looking to fulfill community service requirements to those who'd like to became a regular volunteer, helping care for the landscape or with special events, whether two hours a month or more.
We will be describing the various volunteer opportunities at this week's Volunteer Info Tea, Thursday afternoon, May 1, from 4:00-5:30 pm. If you can't make it Thursday but are interested in discussing a possible role as a volunteer, please call us at 617-333-0924 x22.

Reminder:
Spring Shearing Day: May 10, 10:00-11:00 am
With the arrival of spring, it is time for the estate's three sheep to be sheared again. Maisy, Daisy and Binney have grown a heavy fleece since their shearing last spring. We've invited Kevin Ford, America's foremost "blade" (hand) sheepshearer, back to shear the three small Shetland ewes, demonstrating traditional techniques rather than using more modern razors.
During your visit we hope you'll meet Jack the llama, who protects the sheep from coyotes. For more information, call 617-333-0924.
While this is a free event, donations are always welcome.
Mayfest 2014: May 10, 1:00-4:00 pm
Celebrate Mothers and Mother Earth
In honor of Earth Day and Mother's Day, join the Wakefield Estate, Artspace Milton, and Sustainable Milton for our May Celebration. The event will be held on the grounds of the estate and will feature musical entertainment, art activities for kids, interactive installations and a scavenger hunt! This program is partly funded through a grant from Milton Junior Women's Club. This event is weather-dependent. For more information, call 617 - 333-0924 or visit our website: click here.
