"The winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land."
- Song of Solomon 2:12

Spring has finally sprung - and what a relief after the long, cold winter!
Always the first to add color to our landscape, the cornus mas and witchhazel's delicate yellow blossoms remind me of the explosion of color just waiting to happen.
Today I noticed the Mayapples and the pedasites pushing their tender shoots up through the dark mud -- I imagine they are as happy as I am to finally feel the warmth of the spring sun after an unusually long dormancy.
I can almost hear the trees and plants around me letting out a sigh of relief - the long dark night is past; time for growth and new life!

Two special events on one special day!
Spring Shearing Day: May 10, 10:00-11:00 am
With the arrival of spring, it is time for the estate's three sheep to be sheared again. Maisy, Daisy and Binney have grown a heavy fleece since their shearing last spring. We've invited Kevin Ford, America's foremost "blade" (hand) sheepshearer, back to shear the three small Shetland ewes, demonstrating traditional techniques rather than using more modern razors. During the 1990s, Polly Wakefield kept twenty-five Dorset sheep here at the property. We were surprised to discover that it was none other than Kevin who sheared Polly's sheep each spring!
During your visit we hope you'll meet Jack the llama, who protects the sheep from coyotes. For more information, call 617-333-0924.
While this is a free event, donations are always welcome.
