"When the April wind wakes the call for the soil, I hold the plough as my only hold upon the earth, and, as I follow through the fresh and fragrant furrow, I am planted with every foot-step, growing, budding, blooming into a spirit of spring."

- Dallas Lore Sharp, 1870-1929

In the wake of the bombings at the Boston Marathon and the loss of innocent lives, it's especially hard to find meaning in the mundane tasks of our every-day lives. Instinctively perhaps, I have wanted to be outside since the events of April 15. And being outside these past few days, I have paid special attention to observe the resiliency of the natural world -- that despite the long odds of surviving a dark, cold winter, plants and animals revive the landscape from one of dark stillness to verdant splendor. May nature's resiliency be a model for us as we continue on, coming to terms with a different landscape that will be forever changed.

Spring Shearing Day:
May 11, 10:00 am-12 noon

With the arrival of spring, it is time for the estate's three sheep to be sheared again. Maisy, Daisy and Binney have grown a heavy fleece since their first shearing last spring. We've invited Kevin Ford, America's foremost "blade" (hand) sheepshearer, back to shear the three small Shetland ewes, demonstrating traditional techniques rather than  using more modern razors. He has made his living at sheepshearing for over 20 years, and conducts many workshops and public demonstrations. During the 1990s, Polly Wakefield kept twenty-five Dorset sheep here at the property. We were surprised to discover that it was none other than Kevin who sheared Polly's sheep each spring!

During your visit we hope you'll meet Jack the llama, who protects the sheep from coyotes. For more information, call 617-333-0924. While this is a free event, donations are always welcome.
