winterfire
"...let us remember that there is a creative force in this universe, ...a power that is able to make a way out of no way and transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows."
 -  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sitting around the warm fire at this year's Winterfire reminded us of this quote by Martin Luther King Jr. and prompted us to reflect on the work we do here at the Wakefield Estate. For beyond the work of restoring and sharing the landscape and providing innovative learning opportunities for all, there is (and we've observed it) an element of a creative force right here at the estate, opening up new opportunities and experiences that transform lives in the process. The glow of the fire on the faces of those that braved the cold at Winterfire is also reflected in the faces of hundreds of children who come to the estate each year to enjoy the simple pleasure of being in contact with nature - and experience for themselves that creative force that can transform dark yesterdays into bright tomorrows.

Saturday, February 9, 9:00-11:30 am
Back by popular demand! Our annual Backyard Homesteading workshop on raising backyard chickens generally draws a "standing room only" crowd. This session is designed for people who are interested in learning how to start a backyard chicken coop and grow healthy, productive chickens for years of enjoyment and fresh food. Suggested donation for the workshop is $15; space IS limited so please pre-register by calling 617-333-0924. After the indoor portion of the workshop, there will be a tour of the coops and chicken tractors on site, so dress accordingly.
