Wakefield Estate

"In June, as many as a dozen species may burst their buds on a single day.  No man can heed all of these anniversaries; no man can ignore all of them."

 - Aldo Leopold

June came and went quickly, full of events and activities here at the Wakefield Estate.  The month began with our annual Dogwood Days open house and gardens; over 100 people toured the estate over two days.  We concluded another successful year of our school field trips and after school program, which bring nearly 1000 K-5 students to the estate each spring. We also concluded our three-part lecture series on the history of one of Milton's founding families, looking at the material culture of those who lived here for the past 250 years.

While June was a month to tie things up, it was also a month to launch our summer collections internships, and we welcomed three new interns to help process and catalogue the estate's collections.

With June now behind us, we look forward to our two summer programs, the Summer Archaeology Institute and our Summer Landscape Intern program.  I have a feeling that July will come and go as quickly as June did!

Celebrating the completion
of another great school year!

By mid-June, we at the Wakefield Estate are a little weary and sun-burned but ready to celebrate the fact that an estimated 2000 school children experienced nature and science up close and personal over the 2011-2012 school year during their field experiences to the estate. We have seen the profound impact these explorations have had on these young people, and are always excited and grateful when we are able to forge partnerships with new schools through funding received from the Boston Youth Environmental Network's Get Out And Learn program. This year Henry Grew and Fifield schools visited for the first time, and while Charles Taylor, Conley, Boston Teachers Union, and Jackson Mann schools returned, along with our Hyde Park SHOUT after school program. While Jack the llama and our sheep are a real hit with the kids, the visits also provide a "wonderful extension from the classroom lessons to the real world," as one science specialist put it. Thanks to all our partner schools and teachers, the students, and the GOAL program for a great 2011-2012 school year!
